Leishmaniasis (Sand Fly disease)

I am keen to avoid this disease in my dog. What do others do? My British vet gave me Advantix but I hear that there is a vaccination available?

Thanks for that very helpful reply Kimmy. I will investigate the single vaccine route.
Does anyone know the first signs of the disease, or do they vary? My dog is showing very vague signs like intermittent diarrhoea, slight lethargy sometimes, a little eye discharge. All of these have other explanations of course.

My vet recommended the oral solution Leishguard rather than injections. He says he uses that himself. Similar cost to injections but you have to do it 3 times per year for 30 period each time. Look at Advantage gel rather than Advantix - it claims to cover more problems. I use Scalibor collar as well, seems to work for my GSD
