Yes flies are a problem in some areas. We have only been living in Spain for 16 months and in our first summer they weren't too bad. This summer they were a massive nuisance and were evident for much of the year.
We live in an agricultural area with fruit trees and sometimes manure is spread slightly further away melons are grown. My advice is not to underestimate it as a problem and do a little more research on your specific area.
We have had to buy some electric table top devices which have a spinning top, a little like an inverted windmill. These keep flies off of your food.
We have also invested in screens for our doors and windows which prevent many of the critters entering our home.
