Hi Lesleyrose,

It was less than 1 year after we got our residency when we changed our UK licences for Spanish. The thing is that you have to notify DVLA if you are no longer resident there, and return your licence after 6 months. Look at the DVLA website and it will confirm this. You should always inform them of a change of address even in the UK, and I believe there is a penalty for not doing so. You do not have to wait 2 years in Spain.

Hi Lesley. As you're still a youngster out here, I wouldn't recommend trying to do it yourself. I suggest you ask your gestor if that's something she can handle. If not, I'm sure another member will recommend someone in your area.

Yes I agree Jim. We used our solicitor, and it was easier for her to get an appointment at Trafico in Alicante than we could have. We took ourselves for the medical at Psitechnico first, but as their certificate and the Padron is only valid for 3 months, I would recommend that you ask the solicitor when an appointment can be made at Trafico, so that they haven't expired. There can be a couple of months waiting time. Best of luck.

Just a thought in passing. Some years ago when we changed our licenses, we employed a gestor to see us through the process. He did the dirty deed at Trafico at Murcia, because they were much quicker than Alicante. I don't know if that's still the case, but it's worth checking.

Now that there's a Trafico at Elche, I'd consider that as well. People I know who've used the Elche Trafico have been impressed by how pleasant it was, compared to the bun fight at Alicante.
