Our electricity bill has increased from €130 in Feb to €270 in march. Contacted iberdrola who say 48% increase but this is 100% increase in 1 month. Just 1 person living there. Meter checked & still sealed. Anyone any ideas please. Iberdrola say we are on the best tariff.

Kind regards

Hi,

I do not have any answers for you. I also live alone and my bills from Iberdrola for January and February were 316€ and 259€.  I went home 12th of February so the March bill was only 66€. Used the washing machine once, did not have many showers, but I made all my meals at home and used an electric heater.  Anyhow, it is terrible, my worry is that the prices will stay high into the future.

Kind regards,

Grete

I also live alone and my bills are usually around the 25/30 eur

my latest bill (estimated is for 35 eur )

I use a kettle on the gas hob. Most of my meals cooked on gas hob although i use my Halogen oven once or twice a week

washing done at weekends. I watch tv most night until 12pm ish and very rarely use putting lights on. I dont have air con but ive used a small fan heater when its colder

Ive just bought a light with a fan inside (leroys ), but not installed it for the hotter periods

Im typical Yorshireman with short arms and long pockets but it works for me

Hi Lyn,

Are you aware of the 3 billing periods, so that you can adapt your usage accordingly?  I've attached a photo of them, extracted from this article, which also has some useful tips on how to reduce your bills:

Even at todays prices bills of 316€ and 259€ are astonishing.

Averaging that out over the 2 months and assuming 25% overheads (standing charges and IVA etc.), at Iberdrolad's current flat rate kWh price of 0.2445€ it works out to consuming approx 30kWh every single day which is insane!

To add some perspective to that a typically electric heater will consume around 1.5kWh so would need to be on for 20 hours to consume 30kWh.

Hi Lyn

We find that the most important things to look at are hot water and heating. It's very much worthwhile using a timer on your water heater, set to switch on during cheap rate. If it has an external thermostat, consider turning it down a bit. If your water heater is old, it may be a good idea to replace it, maybe with a smaller one.

If you're using Aircon for heating, have the filters been cleaned recently? That's very easily done. If you're using a freestanding heater, consider getting a modern one (I can't be more specific because we use the Aircon).

If you heat you bedroom at night, consider using an electric blanket instead - far cheaper!

The other things you use (oven, hob, washers etc) have far less effect on the bill.

Hope this helps!

Cheers
