Thanks Kim, that makes perfect sense!

Hi Klee,

Except that Martin has said his S1 WAS acceptable proof of health care and didn't prevent him obtaining ongoing health care in the UK.  It will be interesting to hear which consular office he applied to and how long the visa process took him - it wouldn't be the first time that Spanish authorities applied the rules differently on any given day 😉

Kind regards,

Kim

I was thinking exactly the same Kim!

Very recently there was also the member that stated he was applying for his NLV while he was actually in Spain!!

Is there really any wonder people either get it wrong or give up because it’s so confusing

I’ve re read Steve’s “guide” and he definitely states he needed PHI in place before his appointment at the consulate 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤪🥂

Thanks for this info. I'm wondering if you ot anyone else can help with what order to do things? We are just deciding at the minute what area to possibly buy a property to move to straight away.

Steve,

If you are recently retired why didn't you use the S1 form instead of paying £1400 for medical insurance?

Because I’m only 53!!

😁😁 a youngster!

Thanks Steve. Did you, when going through your application requirements, get any sense of it being different, i.e. S1 for state pension applicants?

Did it differential between the health cover requirements? 🤪🥂

Hello Steve

Thats really useful thank you. How long is the visa valid for and do you know if you have to repeat this whole process every time it expires?

Regards

P.

I have just completed the process in London - a bit tougher than Manchester I think! To answer your question though -  the visa that is added to your passport is valid for 90 days initially. This is to give you time to get to Spain, register on the Padron and obtain your TIE. Once TIE is completed the visa is valid for One year. At the end of year one you apply for an extension - that will be for 2 years and you will need to provide financial evidence for 2 years. Last step is renewal for a further 2 years making 5 in total. This then switches you to permanent resident and all that entails!  There is a kicker though, which caught me by surprise. During your initial 5 years you can only be out of Spain for a total of 10 months. If you exceed this you do not get automatic residency! Not sure what happens then?
