Best route from Cherbourg to Costa Brava

I'm coming to San Miguel in October via Cherbourg. I can't decide whether to take a scenic and slow route (got plenty of time on my hands) or go for the quickest, although I'd obviously prefer to avoid the worst of the toll roads in France.

Any tips on which toll roads are worth it?

Check out Via Michelin, we planned a route from Cherbourg to La Zenia last year with overnight stays in pet friendly hotels as we were bringing our dog out here. The route planner is great with all tolls detailed.

Toll roads all the way from Calais. Costs about £105. Takes us approx 19-21 hrs we share the driving and have a few hours sleep stop near the Spanish border.

Don't see the point in taking it easy as I have dogs  which limits the quality of hotels I can stay in. So get straight  there and enjoy my own bed in Spain. Rather than a grotty hotel on the way

There was nothing grotty about any of the pet friendly hotels we stayed in, spotlessly clean, friendly staff and a proper breakfast before setting off again.

I have two 60k dogs. Most of the hotels have limits on one dog usually handbag type with a limit of 10-15kg

That is a bit different to a Lhasa Apso.

Handbag type. That's the problem if I had a hotel I wouldn't let me stay with the dogs either
