You'll get a million and one opinions on this. I do it twice a year.

Usually Leave NW England 4.30 am Friday morning arrive in Villamartin 12.30 pm Saturday afternoon .

Drive all the way Eurotunnel share driving with wife. Stop every 3 hrs with the dogs. Short nap stop in car Spanish Border then go for it.

Toll roads all the way using the Le Mans and Bordeaux route

If planning to drive try looking at Via Michelin to plan your route, it provides detailed information including service areas ( most have parks where you can walk your dog ), where and how much the tolls are.

Keep to west side of France only 1 toll  [ around Bordeux and use hotel for overnight stay   ] .

Or use Brittany ferries , cost around £100 more , but no tolls , fuel bills ,  average speed and radar traps , French police asking for "coffee money" , less wear and tear on vehicle and nerves, no risk of being attacked or robbed  …!!!!

Jump on the boat and cruise over , let someone else  do the work ,then  easy 8 1/2 hr drive to c/blanca , arrive refreshed without  all the grief and takeing 3 days to recover ……….your choice ………….!!!!!

That's the problem with the ferry. It's only viable if you travel outside peak times.

The cost if you can get a slot during peak times is astronomical.

Costs me ÂŁ750 for the round trip. Including tolls, fuel and Eurotunnel.

When I have costed the ferry with dog friendly cabins. (I have two very large dogs). It was ÂŁ850 more and 12 hr longer journey.

Maybe when I'm older and cannot do the drive anymore I will look at the ferry. It's just not viable at the moment.

We've just done this and travelled through central France with our 2 dogs. Wasn't to bad stopped overnight at Auberge near Clermont Ferrand.

Cost ÂŁ500 one way (fuel, tolls, tunnel, overnight stop).

Going round Paris was a bit of a pain so will look at the Bourdeux route next time

We usually come over on the ferry to Bilboa/Santander then an easy drive across Spain, around 8 hours including a few short stops for the dogs
