Water disconnected for the most bizarre reason
When Santander took over Banco Popular my accounts were frozen. After numerous phone calls from the UK to Spain it appeared the direct debits were not paid as Santander's computer system does not recognise the apostrophe in my name. I am Linda Christine D'Arcy but Santander referred to me on their website yesterday as Hello "Cute Christine" and at other times I am " Arcy".
I paid the reinstatement fee for the water supply at that time and because of the exchange rateI overpaid to ensure I had less chance of a future problem. The water supply 11 months later has again been cut off and I have to pay a reinstatement fee to the water company. The reason given by the water company is that if you overpay, they will not take the direct debit payment for that quarter and as such you end up with a partially unpaid bill. All subsequent direct debits have been fine and there has been sufficient funds at all times
They refuse to write to an English address to notify you and because of Covid restrictions we have not returned to Spain yet and therefore did not get the mail.
What a bizarre system where a partial cash payment part way into a quarter creates that they will not call for the balance on the normal due date and create so much stress and chaos.
