I gave you the requirements in an earlier post, including a link to the DGT license rules PDF.

What more do you want to know?

Yes i didn't realise that was a link.

Where do you go for a medical? How much does the medical cost and what do you have to take with you? Is it advisable to get an appointment made at trafico before you book in for a medical?

Is a advanced level of Spanish needed to go through the process?

Where do i go on the dgt website for the forms?

Thanks

Medical centres are here:

Medical Centres

I can't remember the cost, although I do remember it wasn't much, but that's academic as you've got to do it anyway.

No point making a Tráfico appointment until you've got the medical.

You might be more comfortable making an appointment with a centre where English is spoken - if your friends locally don't know, just ring the centres and ask 'habla inglés'.

Also look at this:

Requirements for changing a driving license

The application form used to be a Mod 2.40, but I can't now find this on DGT's website, and I think they've binned some of the specific use forms and made them into one that's multi-purpose, probably this:

Application form

If your Spanish isn't very good, then I very strongly suggest you take a Spanish speaker with you to Tráfico, otherwise you might have a wasted journey.

Psicotécnico Orihuela Costa

Calle Alahambra 12 - Local 3

La Zenia 11

Only Monday and Friday, from 16:30 to 20:30, no appointment, just turn up so best to go at 4:30pm. Cost 43:50, a very easy test. They can give you a list of the documents you will need. Just take your driving licence to take the test. However, please find out how long you have to wait to get an appointment with Trafico. They insisted on my original NIE certificate, not a photocopy. You go first with all the documents, and then once these have been checked with the U.K. you have to return to get the certificate to say that you can drive. Trafico will return your UK licence to DVLA. All my documents were taken there early December, and I am still waiting for the solicitor to say that she can pick my certificate up. The actual plastic licence arrives much later by post. Note the Health Test certificate last only 3 months, as does the Padron, so make sure Trafico will see you during that time or you will have to do them both again!

You can Google Psicotecnico to get directions. There is also one in Torrevieja.

Ok i'm having trouble finding the forms on the website, including the one to pay cash (modelo 791), and in finding a contact email address to confirm that the form you linked to is definitely the one i need. It's also proving difficult finding out what you click on to make an appointment at your chosen centre. Can either of you help with this? Once again i appreciate all the help you've given thus far.

I speak and understand some Spanish but it's not advanced enough to do this.

I also thought the Padron certificate lasted a year. Why go through the hassle of moving somewhere and getting a padron if they run out every 3 months? Seems a overkill on the paperwork to me. As per Jims requirement sheet its not needed anyway is it? A residence certificate and a passport plus photo's etc isn't it? It also says "and any other required document". Well, how are you supposed to know what the 'other required docs' are? Makes it sound like you can turn up and have to go home straight away as they spring random surprises on you.

The payment form is a three page self-carboning document, and couldn't be downloaded, so I had to go along and ask for a blank form. I've just had a look and found that DGT now allow some Modelo 791 payments online, but unfortunately this doesn't include the change of license.

DGT don't give out an email address, but if you know a Spanish speaker, you could ask him to ring them to confirm the application form number.

The medical centre I used weren't online so I couldn't book an appointment that way, but I just went along when they opened and only had to wait ten minutes.

I didn't need a padron. As an aside, a padron lasts five years or until your town hall tell you that you need to renew it, but if some organisation want to see your padron, they normally want one that's less than three months old, so you have to get a copy. In the early days, I got fed up with that, but it's surprising what you can create in Photoshop!

The other paperwork required at the time I did it was a statement that there were no outstanding motoring offences that hadn't been recorded against my license, and a statement that I was mentally fit. Unfortunately, because it was a one time process, I didn't keep copies.

The two years referred to in your quote refers to the period of grace given by DGT for people to take action in transferring their licenses, but as the quote says, that two year period had now expired.

Read the DGT publication (in English) at the following link:

DGT license rules

I don't know how much time you have to apply for a Spanish license after taking up residence. I think it's one month, but haven't got time to search BoE for the relevant law.

A fine for not changing your license will be more that the cost of the change.

The dgt link seems to not work anymore can you update on the requirements to exchange driving licence
