Thanks all for the congrats, what a relief.

Now let's hope the PTB get their act together and show some common sense and compassion by permitting people to change their UK licence for a Spanish licence.

It costs a small fortune to get your NLV and then to jump through another fairly expension hoop is pushing to far.

Muchas suertas a todos

Hi all,

Been a while since I posted anything on this site, but would ask if anyone can bring me up to speed on a driving licence matter. I often used to rent cars in Spain, and had no probs at all with the process. More recently I have had no real need to hire cars as our property in Santa Pola is conveniently near the airport  and is well served by public transport. However we would like to visit a nephew who lives well off the beaten track, and a rented car would make this the easiest way of achieving this.

I am totally confused by the ins & outs of driving licence validity, UK vs. Spanish, so can some kind & patient soul explain to me whether or not, my full and pristine UK licence would still, as before, during those lovely days of old when we were in the EU, cover me for a rented car, without having to enter the convoluted labarynth of getting a Spanish licence as well?

Best wishes to all ,and thanks to those who have assisted me previously

Ray

If you are not a permanent resident here then a UK licence is fine. Some hire companies insist on an IDP which is absolutely not needed but they can make their own rules, even if it is just down to misunderstanding the actual rules so make sure you find a company which doesn't insist on it or you can get one from a post office in the UK for a few quid.
If you live here then after 6 months your UK licence is invalid and can't be used for hiring a car or driving yours or anyone else's with or without an IDP.

Hello Cheryl,

I am grateful for your perfect reply, which answers my first question as well as any  likely subsequent ones. I live some of the time in SP and the rest in Scotland, so my existing licence should suffice for the time being. Hopefully neither Spain nor the UK will  change anything adversely in the near future.

thanks again, and if I can answer anything for yourself, please don’t hesitate in asking.

If you reside in the U.K. and visit Spain 90/180 then you can still use your U.K. driving licence
