My children play on the apparatus and football on the plaza on Calle Salzburgo. There is dog shit everywhere and it gets on my children’s clothes and shoes. There is no attempt to clean it up. I have sent photos of dog owners and the shit to the council. I am sure owners think they can’t be seen, even at night there is lighting. I don’t blame the dogs, only the filthy idiots that own them. There is waste land just 50 metres away, but they prefer their dogs shit in a nice plaza where children play.

Unfortunately the world over there are dog owners who are complete morons when it comes to letting their dogs mess anywhere and refusing to pick up afterwards. They give the vast majority of responsible dog owners a bad name.

Aitch.

Hi Terry,

What frustrates me is that there's Spanish national legislation, enacted in 2013, that gives municipal town halls the power to roll out dog DNA testing to identify the culprits of this disgusting practice, but whilst some councils have done this, many haven't bothered.  Where I live in Formentera del Segura, this scheme was rolled out last summer - our town hall gave all dog owners a free period, in which we could take our woof to a designated vet to have a blood test with the DNA profile taken and the details added to the microchip.  Owners of dogs that have been DNA tested are given a barcoded tag which it's mandatory to add to the woof's collar, so that police can see at a glance that they comply.  Perhaps you could suggest to your town hall that they roll out this scheme?

Kind regards,

Kim

Thank you Kimmy, I have sent a copy of your note to the local council, hope you don’t mind.

Hi Terry,

No, of course not, I hope it helps.  You may want to Google the issue for other examples too - here are a few:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/18/dna-testing-dog-poo-spanish-city-on-the-scent-of-owners-who-dont-pick-up

https://www.thelocal.es/20160202/guadalajara-to-keep-dna-database-of-naughty-poo-dropping-pet-owners

https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2017/03/21/inenglish/1490088206_572911.html

https://www.surinenglish.com/national/202106/09/database-spain-streets-poop-20210609120526.html

Whilst there are some large towns listed in these articles, our little Spanish town of Formentera del Segura has less than 4,200 inhabitants - if our Ayuntamiento decides to take this issue seriously, what's the excuse for those who haven't? 🤔

Good luck!

Kind regards,

Kim
