Yes, although it seems to depend on which companies you are using.

To explain, Wise euro accounts have a Belgian IBAN. EU law (I believe) says that these IBANs have to be respected across the EU, but some companies don't accept them until you nag them!

As a specific example, the Hidraqua website insists on a Spanish IBAN - but when I messaged them they accepted my Wise Belgian IBAN, no problem. My suspicion is that they had to accept non-Spanish IBANs on their payment systems to comply with the law, but forgot about the website (or didn't want to pay to change it).

By comparison, it was a simple matter to change my DD to Iberdrola Clientes.

IBAN Problems: The IBAN format is from 16 digits (Belguim-WISE), 20 digits (Lithuania-REVOLUT) 24 digits (Spain) and up to 32 digits elsewhere. The problems occur when Spanish utility companies etc have their websites set-up for 24 digit numbers with no choice to use less or more digits. This is easily rectified if you can contact an english speaker in their offices, or spanish speaker if your language skills are up to it. EU law stipulates that you cannot be refused using any european IBAN, but if the website refuses you then this is not really counted as a refusal as you have the option to sort it out over the phone or in the office.

I’ve contacted my La Caixa branch about this Imagin account…….guess what…….only available to Spanish residents as you need a DNI. As a non-resident it’s not available to me!! Usual con merchants….still have to pay €35 a quarter.

I didn't know that. But I'm assuming that the OP is resident.

Just checked out the terms and conditions on the website for the Imagin account and it quite clearly states that you have to be over 18 with a Spanish ID or Foreigners ID. As always with Spanish banks non-residents are precluded!!!

We have a non resident account with Cajamar bank. It's called the Weferrent Account. Must be opened in branch if non resident but after that it's an online account without fees. Haven't paid a cent in fees since March 2019 and totally happy with it. Pays all our DD,s and can do transfers to any bank online.

La Caixa bank accepts my British passport and my NIE as ID, but not for this type of free account even though I have sufficient funds in my account for all my bills and other expenditure, and do all my banking transactions online. I do have a Wise account for transferring monies out to Spain, but don’t want to use this for paying bills. So back to the drawing board.

Thanks. A lot of people have informed this forum on many occasions about the Weferrent account, but every time I’m out in Spain I don’t seem to be able to get to the local Cajamar branch to open an account with them. I’d prefer to do everything online, but once again you have to have a DNI or Residents card to open the account online. Must take the time to visit a branch close to me in Gran Alacant on my next visit.

So use Wise.com instead - very quick and easy online.

No Spanish ID required, just use your passport.

Some banks are free provided you put so much a month and pay DD through them

Why don't you want to use Wise for paying bills? It would be no different to any other account (unless you need an overdraft)?
