Why don't you want to use Wise for paying bills? It would be no different to any other account (unless you need an overdraft)?

Cheers

Steve

I was going to do that then I heard that they were charging people for using their Visa card to withdraw money when in Spain. So I think I’ll change banks and open a Wefferent account at Cajamar bank when next in Spain. Thanks anyway.

Hi

Lots of people on this forum use Wise.com - me included. N26 https://n26.com/en-es/bank-account is also popular.

Cheers

Steve

N26 is to be avoided!!!  For two years I had an N26 Account and I was very pleased with it  until October 2022 when they closed my account without explanation. This happened to 400 accounts across Europe. They claimed that I was not using my account properly. "Money Laundering" was one of the possible claims. The only laundering I do is when I use my washing machine.

I have not had access to the money in my account ever since. In October when I came out of hospital, having had my fourth heart attack, I was left without any money. I still do not have access to any of my money. Check out www.n26complaints and you will hear the stories of other account holders. I told them of my health issues and that got me no where. You cannot contact them on the phone but only through email. I have remained calm through all of this for the sake of my heart.

According to their regulations I may hear within 60 days of my original complaint on 1st November. That means I may get my money in the early New Year.

It is interesting that they are not an acceptable Bank in the USA but only in Europe. I did my homework before opening an account with someone who knows about International Banking and things seemed fine.

The latest email from them is to suggest contacting either the Banking Ombudsman in Berlin or Madrid.

Wise do make charge for withdrawing cash over 200 euros a month but I just use my Wise debit card for shopping, bar and restaurant bills and never get near my 200 euro limit.

Yes, you can set up your utility direct debits with Wise.

Steve

Help!  I have opened an account with Wise. Do I contact each direct debit that I pay and give them the electronic details for Wise. Does it work the same way as Sabadell, you just maintain a balance?  Sorry to be so ignorant, I am 87 and each year I become more ignorant. Thanks for any help.

Hi Doreen

No need to shout for HELP ! - seems like you are on top of things here!

Your utility or other providers will set up the DD's once you notify them of your change of bank details, all you need to do is ensure that the balance in your your Wise Euro account is kept above what your direct debits total, much like any other bank reallyly. If a DD is attempted t be taken out and your balance is below that amount, then the payment wont be processed

Once up and running it is seamless process, if you're using their mobile app you will get a text message every time a payment is taken out of your account - whether shopping, dining or a DD - this will help you to keep tracks on your spend and know when it's time to top up

Be aware though that (as far as I am aware) you will have to top your Euro account up yourself, you cannot set payments up to be done automatically from your Wise GBP account

Hi

To address the last point by (the other) Steve in Playa Flamenca...

If you have insufficient funds in your euro account to fulfill a DD, Wise will automatically convert the appropriate amount from your GBP account in order to honour the DD.

Cheers

Steve
