Yes I agree with that the thinking was to fly to Portugal drive to our house in Spain stay for a week then back to Portugal for 14 days

Do it!  Enjoy every minute of it. Goodness knows when you will get over again.  So much more pleasant to spend 14 days wining and dining in some idyllic place in Portugal as opppsed to looking out the window at the world going by at home!

Hi all, love the thinking about this and would dearly like to think this route would be achievable; the only problem that I see is, that as long as the UK government  continues to not recommend travel to Spain, any medical travel insurance becomes invalid for the time spent in Spain which is something that I would personally not want to risk! Just a thought?

It should be mentioned, however, that full EHIC emergency health cover equal to that available from the NHS is, until at least 31st December 2020 is still available  if so required during any stay in an EU country.

Your right Les, I completely overlooked that, thanks for the reminder. We can now still have some health cover which means we can come out to find a forever home, yes!!!!!

We ‘phoned our insurance company a few weeks ago to see how we would be fixed if we travelled as planned to Spain. First question asked” when did you book your flight”. January 2020, answer, before the Coronavirus pandemic   Reply” you are covered completely including COVID 19”. Perfect result. Insurance intact, flights booked and everything is pointing at us flying to good old Alicante and onwards to Torrevieja. Only spending 2 weeks instead of the 4 weeks originally planned but happy enough with that. 2 weeks self isolating/quarantining at home and then we can go out and about again. Black winter boots and clothes at the ready and October will be here by then!  Roll on vaccination for Covid-19. Soon we will be free to travel the world again. Ever optimistic, I booked flights for February 2021 to travel to various locations all over Europe. Fingers crossed. Failing that, we will be at home hibernating instead.

Thanks for your uplifting comment Grannyrose, I do hope your plans work out👍 Just a quick addendum to my last comment to Les, I mentioned this discussion to one of our son’s who owns in Tenerife who kindly pointed out that whilst the reciprocal emergency medical treatment with Spain will in deed remain in place for the time being, it does not cover repatriation back to the UK which could prove extremely expensive.

The quarantine starts the day you leave Spain so if you choose to spend it in a country that have no quarantine rules for Spain that’s fine. We are spending our quarantine in Greece! This is the number for self isolation queries in the UK 0800 678 1767 I double checked with them first.  As Portugal currently have no isolation rules in place for visitors to Spain. You can go enjoy a holiday there then as long as you travel direct from Portugal and don’t re- enter Spain you don’t have to quarantine 😀

Drummerel, the repatriation issue is correct , however, as stated, full emergency  health cover equal to that provided by the NHS is still available.

Life is based on assessing risks and dealing with them accordingly.  At present,Itravelling to Spain minus travel Insurance is one of those risks, but non the less it is absolutely legal and possible .

Too true. I would not travel anywhere without the best travel insurance as I don’t take risks with my health or life.

Anyone who chances it, is foolish or even reckless.  Another few hours and we will be on our way! It’s really strange knowing that we are actually going to get a flight and go!  It is my dearest wish that life will get back to normal sooner rather than later.  Cheers everyone.
