It was a warning more than anything else. I know I cannot retieve my files.

The car came into it because I was trying to find an oil leak in a part of the car without easy access. (Jaguar 2.7D) using an endoscope. I last used the endoscope before updating my PC from Win8.1 to Win10. Now with Win10 the drivers did not work. I searched for new drivers and in the download for ViewPlayCap drivers I got some ransomeware and other trojans etc.

Almost all of my files are now heavily encrypted, without any possibility of retrieval. Check out "CDMX files and STOP djvu" The root cause is the shitty Microsoft system of Updates etc.not being backward compatible.I have about 350GBts of useless data. Tomorrow I start the rebuilds, Win 10 against Linux Mint. I have spent over 15 hours in the last 2 days, removing malware and trying to get all the normal daily progs we use working again.

Remember nothing works apart from the OS, drivers for cellphones, logins no longer exist even access to linkedin  had a new user. Every app wants IDs and without drivers you are OUT !! I have the basics back, almost and bank data is in my head and not in computer/phones etc. isn't a pen and paper useful?

As an aside in 1995 I bought an organiser very nice, I put in hundreds of contacts, they got corrupted twice by my cellphone being near, Between new batteries and hours lost, I was seriously hacked off. I bought 2 paper notepads. I borrowed an axe and chopped the organiser in half. I saw invisible tape advertised so I joined the 2 halves and put it above my desk. A warning to all, now I have paper copies and a simple code between the copies to keep all imprtant stuff.

I will update on the MS v Linux status

Thanks for the help offers but it is a hopeless case !!

So you downloaded something and your computer is knackered basically? Is it not easier to just wipe the entire system and start again or just buy a new computer?

Did you find where the leak was coming from? It could be something simple like a rubber or a hose. Older jaguars, well older cars in general generally have small leaks that you can see by jacking the car up and getting underneath and having a good look.

I am keeping the folders, sub folders etc.and deleting the contents rather than a complete wipe.. Luckily I have a lot on external HDs, my mail is intact and most legal docs were also on my wifes pc. The backup when I "Upgraded" to win 10 was a bit of a waste of time. My laptop has always been quite fast, more so than my wife's born with Win 10, Both with SDDs.

As for the car we had it on the ramps but couldn't see the source of the leak, hence the endoscope.

For backups, an alternative solution is a cloud service - Dropbox (example) - which every time a file is altered or changed on the computer is backed up in 2 Dropbox folders one on the computer and remotely on the cloud version.

If the computers get stolen/set on fire or anything else  (ransomware) - can instantly use any other/new computer (or iPad/android etc) - to restore all data to any point in time you choose.   No SSDs, spare hard drives - no backing anything up manually. Automatic.

Downside €120 per year.

What I got from this was that you actually downloaded the driver from the correct company's website, and still got ransomware. Scary! And yes, warning noted. Sort of thought these people only targeted businesses. 😢

Looking forward to your comparison.

Chinese company, KK Moon. First 2 of their download sites I tried not working went in circles, Bingo the 3rd one was !!!!!!!!

I have tried the endoscope on Android phone but the apks from playstore don't work either.

Still cleaning up my PC getting rid of all the CDMX files. Chucked 30+GB so far.

Sent report to Spanish national police too.

Have you considered Apple products?

Might not help with your endoscope issues but the system, I find is pretty secure.

Not looking for a big Apple / MS / Android debate.

Sorry to hear you have had the computer issue.

My Win10 which has not been great if I am honest) laptop will not upgrade to Win11 (don't you just love built in obsolescence?), so maybe now is the time for me to look at another operating system. Look forward to your Windows v Linux comparison, installation ease, and costs in time and purchase.

I had my last laptop back up to an external hard drive, which then decided to corrupt all on its own. Even the techies at work could not recover anything from it. Its now a paperweight on my desk.

Hi All Everyone should have Anti  vitus/malware security on the laptops and computers etc. I have bitedefender on mine and its brilliant. It costs aboout £40 for up to 5 devices, including phones.

As for windows 10 I have had no issues with it, but sooner or later people will have upgrade to windows 11, and  W.10 will not be supported.

Machines will not get any updates and that's often when you hit problems, no matter how tech savy you are.

I have three fully working android tablets (2 Samsung, 1 Lenovo) that no longer receive updates as they are "too old".

I cannot even access YouTube or many other apps I used them for, they just stopped.

Along with my corrupted hard drive, they are just paperweights now.
