Hi, I am thinking of buying a Spanish registered used car in Torrevieja, but not from a garage.

The process here in Spain seems excessively complicated to me.

Can someone please give me the address of the 'Local Traffic Office in Torrevieja'  where I have to attend after the purchase ?

Please bear with me I'm new to Spain.

Be extremely careful, buying used vehicle is like Russian roulette, only that you have 5 shells and one empty chamber. Do not trust on whatever the owner may tell you and let some expert have a very close look on how many owners, ITV record, body works etc. and then offer half of what he is asking for. Bear in mind that there is a special transfer tax on used vehicles depending on make and age, not actual condition. Figure out the amount here: https://atenea.ha.gva.es/sara/m620/sim/vehiculos.jsp?lang=va

Paperwork is not that complicated but time wasting and become frustrating when Trafico in Alicante sends you away for this or that reason. Ask a Gestoria (or various) for how much they will take to do this for you. Fees vary from 30,- to 300,-+

There are Tráfico offices in Alicante and Elche, with Elche being far and away the best.

You'd need a sale/purchase contract - compraventa - and a copy of the sellers DNI/NIE.

You'd also need to go to an Agencia Tributaria office to pay the transfer tax before you go to Tráfico to pay the transfer fee.

It's also best to get an informe on the vehicle before you buy it, to make sure there aren't any debts attached to the vehicle.

Thank you Jim for this information. I think this process is beyond me to do. I think I am better to just purchase a car from a garage !

I am also thinking of buying a good second hand car. Any suggestions about the most reputable dealers in Torrevieja? Will the dealer take care of all the paperwork?

Hi Jan49, the process to buy a used car is not complicated at all. As JimTaylor says the first thing is to sign a private contract of sale. Then make an appointment online at Traffic in Alicante or Elche. You must pay the property transfer tax at your local Treasury office. You can download the form fill out and pay online if you have a digital certificate. You can also download the Traffic form online. (This form must be signed by the seller at the time of signing the contract and giving you a copy of his DNI). The day and time of the appointment, you go to Traffic, original and a copy of the contract signed by both, the proof of payment of the tax signed by you and the Traffic form signed by both, you pay the traffic fee (about 50 €) and they deliver the new document to you at the moment. If you go to an agency (gestoría), it is more comfortable but they take you much longer and they charge you a fee that I have never been willing to pay, because the whole process only takes half an hour in home and half an hour in Traffic. Apart from all this, if you think of buying used car from a garage or a sale, do not think that they are therefore more honest than a private individual. There is everything everywhere and often professional car dealers don't tell you the whole truth.

If by chance you were planning to buy an Honda Jazz 1.4 I DSI ES Graphite red color with  51,000 km engine, paint, upholstery and chassis in excellent condition close to new, by 4.500 € I sell one.

Best regards

Miquel
