The easiest and most convenient route is via Madrid. However severe weather conditions may require snow chains and, in the worst case, adequate eqipment to spend some time stuck in heavy snow. My advice: get off the road at dawn and take your time for breakfast. A good place to stay overnight is Exit 17 off the A3 where you can benefit from cheap hotel, superstore, and gas station. Further on mind the "R" marked motorway (tollroad) and continue on the A3 exiting to the M 50 which merges into the A1. The leg from Miranda to Bilbao is a toll road, all others are free. Good luck.

Well, I've got more than 1 foot in the grave, in fact I was about to check out 5 years ago, but also have driven the route countless times in the last 50 years, even when there were no motor roads. One night I got stucked near Alsasua for over 4 hours in 2ft snow.
