Hola amigos

I am writing this in response to many of the comments above which struck a chord with me. I  recently purchased a small apartment in central Torrevieja and hope to come over frequently during the low season ( as the summer months are far too hot for me). Although there are myriad activities ...

...in the town and surroundings, they seem mostly to be directed at those who are spending a relatively long  continuous period in the area whereas I feel the need for a network into which one could  easily dip from time to time. I am a retired teacher of extra mature years and will generally be in the town on my own which does tend to make one feel somewhat vulnerable even though the facilities are very good and I speak good Spanish. I have met a number of people in the same position as well as many  people who bought property with a partner and are now alone and feel nervous visiting on their own. Hence, I rather like the idea of making contact with people in the same position with a view to establishing some sort of network so that one would know when others  were also  likely to be available to meet up for coffee and a chat.  I'd be delighted to hear from anyone  who felt the same so that we could swap dates and meet up when available.

Hi Graham - I purchased my Spanish Bolthole in Toretta Florida 3 yrs ago and often fly over for long wknds on a whim (or because the Scottish weather restricts my options).  It would be great to meet up as and when we're both over there for a coffee, sangria or eats to exchange experiences/local knowledge

I return tomorrow for a 10 day trip - let me know if you're in Spain/free for a blether?

Linda

www.mmetup.com is great. Torrevieja Eat and Social.

I am part of Meetup in the UK but couldn't see the Meetup you mentioned - Torrevieja Eat & Social.  Is that the correct name?

Thanks

Hola Amigos

I posted recently about the problems of meeting others for a little conversation when one is here alone and received some friendly replies which I hope to follow up when I am in Torrevieja for a few weeks from  15th October.  Another thought which strikes me is the possibility of trying to set up a network of 'chatty' cafes, which is taking off here in the UK to address a similar need.  It has also been extended to Gibraltar recently where twenty seven cafes have signed up to be  part of the initiative.  I recently experienced it in a Costa café in Winchester and it worked very well and enabled me to pass an agreeable hour while waiting for an optometrist appointment.

Perhaps those people who have a 'favourite' haunt where they are well known,  might care to discuss it with the management to see if they would accommodate a notice to the effect that  some customers  (possibly wearing a distinctive label) are willing to share a table and socialise.  The spinoff would be that the establishment would be publicised on this website and perhaps on Facebook.  A table might be set aside for this and duly marked out as being for café y charla.  I am intending to try this in Torrevieja, probably starting with the excellent  La Panetteria  which is a relatively new enterprise on the corner of Calle San Pascual and Calle Apolo.

I shall be interested in any respone to this idea.

Un saludo

Graham
