Today we visited a beautiful apartment in Calle Ulpiano. It’s a penthouse with a large terrace. In the hall opposite there was an awful noise coming from a neighbour’s apartment. It continued for few minutes and then when we were leaving it started up again. It was someone inside the apartment who was locked in banging on the door.  There was a hand written notice on the door explaining that the resident was on medication, is visited twice during the day and is left unattended while someone works. There was 2 phone numbers.

I found it very disturbing to say the least. Is this normal ‘care’ for people ?

Hello Gerry

No, far from normal behaviour, I would say.  I would be inclined to notify the police who, in turn could contact social services if needed.   How much of that notice was true  re -visits or someone working? Even if  its true surely more help is required

Better to be wrong than ignore the situation

Cheers

Imagine you are a 30 year old professional who suddenly HAS TO take care of a parent stricken with dementia or another mental illness. You cannot afford a care home or a full time carer. At the same time, you need to earn an income.

Do you leave your parent alone and risk they injure themselves, or do you try to do AT LEAST SOMETHING for them and get them SOME care?

I agree 100% with ElinSpain, go back again and phone the police. It may be nothing, but then again it may be something serious.

Sadly talking from own experience with elderly relative with dementia. The police will come, phone the relative and tell him/her that they need to do something for the person as they are the only responsible. The police does not in the least care in knowing of any personal circumstances or financial situation, nor do social services as they are overwhelmed and not really interested, the standard answer is " you need to do something yourself!"

I don't know the specifics of that case but in mine it was luckily sorted and the relative is looked after in a proper structure, not thanks to social services or any other public body though.

I'm a senior in a care home for Alzheimas, dementia, mental health & many more medicle needs. We are NEVER to leave these people alone. There already trapped and scared in their own body and mind. Let alone being locked in.

I also angry that our countries dont give enough support and charge far too much to support them.

We need to always remember all the hard work our older generation went through to make our countries safe for us.

I feel very sorry for the family and partly understand if they dont work theres no money to financially support them.

I'd make sure everyones been asked to support. England has some support for free depending on family finance.

I hope something fare, safe and supportive gets arranged

Jane
