You will never know if you have selected a good insurer until you have to make a claim, by then it's too late.

Rule of thumb, it's all sweetness and light when any company is flogging you something it's how they handle problems that sets them apart.

Pix Elated, I so agree with you, its not the cost but how they respond that's important. I lost 20,000€ goods approx, total ransacking in 2008, 5 bed home, 2 fully fitted kitchens, and my banks insurance co. refused to pay out, dragged on over a year, ended up with "take us to court".

Reason - we hadn,t declared our home was going to have workman building the AVI trainline right by our house (now 50ft from door) and losing land to train by removing chain link fence, and we should have as they would have felt we were more vulnerable to burglary and wouldn't have accepted the cover. We did not know about the train, we cant declare what we dont know, but they wouldn't accept it. We wouldn't have bought house had we known.

We walked away losing everything with no compensation at all and its put us back by 10years

We insure with English Co. Towergate who have paid out twice with no problems since on other instances. I cant trust Spanish companies after that, but now we have a car in Spain and insured with Liberty Seguros so maybe we made a good decision there. Bank was La Caixa btw. They were no help at all either so left them too.

Regards

Pauline.

We had a flood from apt above both Reale for the Administrators and Mapfre our insurers deny responsibility. So me the innocent party is left to carry the can.  Hence the search.  Thanks.

Strange suggestion. Was previously advised they were also a waste of time. When I click on the link you sent I get an immediate pop-up "your data could be at risk".   Too wary for that!

Hi TwinnieHug,

Perhaps the Spanish insurance ombundsman would be more helpful.  CAB (Citizens Advice Spain) offer an explanation in English and then a link to the website, where you can check whether your insurance company subscribes to the ombundsman service:

https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/faq/how-to-contact-insurance-ombudsman/

Unlike the Financial Ombundsman Service (FOS) in the UK, Spain's version appears to be a voluntary code.  Interestingly, Liberty Seguros do subscribe, but Mapfre and Linea Directa do not.

Kind regards,

Kim

That's awful, it's foolhardy not to have insurance but when something like this happens it makes you wonder what the point of it all is if the companies turn themselves inside out to avoid paying out.
