With the UK Government’s current advice to avoid ‘non-essential’ travel to Spain and 14 day quarantine when returning, my understanding is that if I was to travel to our holiday home, then our existing travel insurance would be invalid.

The quarantine when returning is not a problem for me, but I am worried about travelling without adequate insurance.

It seems that many people are still travelling to Spain, so am I correct in assuming that they are all risking travelling without insurance 🤔

Seems too much of a risk to me!

Hi Swallow, and welcome to the Forum,  Most Travel Insurances , especially those taken out prior to mid March this year will be invalid ,in Spain, as long as the Foriegn and Commonwealth Office continue to advise against all but essential travel to Spain.

Bear in mind that your EHIC will still give free emergency medical cover .

Hi there

Some policies, within certain date parameters, cover C19 under “emergency medical associated expenses”. They will not, however, cover any other circumstances, such as cancellation or abandonment of the trip, due to C19.

As Les states, there’s EHIC, valid until the end of the year

The policy cover and EHIC give me enough confidence to be in Spain; I’ll consider the risks the flight might present nearer my intended departure date in September 🤪🥂

Hi Swallow

I have been having this very problem and have spent hours researching the best cover available.

Have you contacted your current insurer and had them confirm that they will offer no cover if you travel against the fco advise? I have seen a couple that are still covering if you already had a policy before the pandemic but not many and not the insurers that myself or my parents were with.

If you were to look for a new policy today with the fco advise still in place then you won't find any offering any cover for Covid. There are 2 companies i have found that offer normal medical cover and baggage etc. True traveller insurance offered to me and my son but would offer no insurance to my mum due to her pre existing condition. Big cat travel insurance offered to my mum and they will cover her for medical but not her pre existing.

Along with the Ehic card, this is what we have gone for and will be travelling on Thursday but if anything happens with Covid we will get no help with flights back.

Hi, thank you, we also have flights booked for September so will make a decision nearer the time, but just waiting and hoping that the situation will improve before then. ☀️⛱🥂

Hi Swallow43,

We renewed our travel insurance with Nationwide yesterday. They confirmed they will provide cover as normal, including Covid-19 illness cover, despite FCO guidance. The only things they won't cover is cancellation (down to the airline/travel company if they cancel or us if we chose to when the flight is still going), or repatriation in the event of Covid-19.

According to the representative we spoke to they are one of the few companies still providing this cover. However, it wasn't clear if this policy is only available to current account holders (we are), as she said they'd had a big increase in people wanting to open current accounts?

Hi Cookep1

SAGA also include repatriation alongside emergency cover for C19 and with the exclusions you’ve described 🤪🥂

I'm supposed to be travelling on the 27th Aug but will be dependant on circumstances. In light of all the useful information in this thread I will contact my insurance company to see where I stand. Mine doesn't run out until January next year so hopefully I will have some cover for the dreaded CV19.

Hi, thank you all for your comments and thoughts which have been very helpful.

I am continuing to explore options, but now feel more reassured that cover is available although with certain restrictions.

We have another month before our flights, so anything could change it that time, but hopefully we will be ok to travel, fingers crossed
