Over the last year or so the cleanliness of the roads and and pavements in the Torretas has got worse and worse. Every so often they send a sort of road sweeper truck which runs around redistributing any stones or rubbish that comes across to another part of the road. If you are unlucky enough to have it stop outside your house for whatever reason, you will have a nice black oil patch on the road. The longer the stop the bigger the patch. There is rubbish every where you look, Stones come out of the unpaved areas and when it rains the mud from these areas is transferred to the roads. I have attached a photo showing what was left a few days after collecting the results of peoples pruning efforts etc. I wonder, do we pay less IBI than other parts of Torrevieja, is that why the efforts of keeping the streets clean are so meagre. Presently we are enjoying multitudes of mosquitos of biblical proportions.

It is the same around all the roads near the pink lake and the sidewalks are all uneven, it makes me wonder what our taxes are spent on, certainly not trying to improve the area.

While recognising the specific deficiency, it seems that the cheapness of the council tax compared to the UK equivalent is quite often remarked upon (even celebrated) on this forum.

Perhaps, one day, someone might suggest that the two issues are in some way connected.

I have to agree.

I'm currently in my pot holed home town, in the UK, where I pay a ridiculous amount of council tax & road tax to drive over a worrying array of potholes and discarded rubbish. Compared to the UK, Spain is the utopia of excellently maintained roads and I really can't understand how they do it for so much less than we pay the UK.

I really think you need to visit the UK for a while, to take in the potholed roads, the litter on the street, crazy parking on the pavement and the dog mess on the pavements. Enjoy the blocked drains, the never ending cones, depicting imaginary works on the highway, for this is the UK now and one of the reasons most of us want to leave.

BTW The picture of your road looks quite good. No potholes, no rubbish, no dog mess, no badly parked cars. Am I missing something?

Have a look at Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa on FB, this will explain why things have deteriorated so badly.

Bascunana has been caught embezzling money, and once again Orihuela is left without a Municipal budget this will be the 3rd year without a budget being set so the budget set 3 years ago in 2018 stands.

Hello Peter

'BTW The picture of  your road looks quite good. No potholes, no rubbish, no dog mess, no badly parked cars. Am I missing something?'

No you're not !!  I've looked several times and it looks pretty good to me. I see worse roads than that everywhere when I'm out & usually  on foot, so get a closer look. No obvious weeds ,  no litter , it looks neat & tidy to me.

Cheers

The point was that this area in and around Habaneras seems somewhat neglected compared to other areas of Torrevieja outside of the centre. As an aside, It is much better than the TP2125 road around El Vendrell which was disgusting, rubbish all along the roadside, rocks, bricks and remnants of accidents often remained on the road for weeks on end.. We lived in Torremolinos and cleanliness was exceptional in all areas as was most of the CDS. (IBI of the same order in all these Spanish areas) It is true the rates are much lower than the UK and slightly lower than Italy where street cleanliness is often lacking. (Won't say anything about rubbish collection in S.Italian cities) Recent visits to the UK surprised me too for the poor quality of the road surfaces including dual carriageways. I guess a lot is spent in the UK on Council housing and social services, although I have not lived there for 40 years and cannot really say. My mother paid about £1400 a year for a tiny little house which really does seem excessive. The care she received at home (She was 90) was superb, and this alone would have cost more than her rates!

A United voice is needed to approach your local Mayor to address the problems- as with anything else the Authorities need to be told of the problems and query whether there is any funding available to fix wobbly pavements, bad road surfaces, dog fouling, etc

Sometimes they don't know of the problems until it's pointed out!!!!!!....... Or perhaps choose to side line areas because no one has complained yet?

My holiday home is in Torreta Florida and the pavements are shocking!!!!!!

There have been many Complaints and they have also been to court  over the dirt track roads and all the rest. The town hall lost about 2 years ago. As for the Mozzies they say they can't spray because of the bees, Didn't worry them in the Spring when there were a lot of flowers etc. !!!
