Jim, my experience trying to get residencia at Alicante which at this time, is the only office accepting applications.

Alicante is the only office for which you can make an online appointment.

Unless things have changed very recently, you can still go to Orihuela or Playa Flamenca and ask for an appointment.

Due to a posting issue I have not been able to reply. below is my intended input.

I would like to add my experience of applying for residencia at Alicante on 7th February this year. I took along a copy of my pardon, three months Spanish bank account statements, passport, two passport size photo’s, my S1, a UK bank statement showing an exceedingly large amount of savings and my pension award letter from DWP for the current year.

The gestor who I used told me there is a female officer who is more than keen on detail and refuses quite a number of applicants.

Unfortunately, it was her I was assigned to. She took all my paperwork and immediately pointed out, the three months bank statements did not show the total running balance down the right hand side of the statement.

This officer also said I needed three months pension credits from the UK showing in my Spanish bank account. I did have more than 700€ credits to my account over the previous three months as transfers from the UK but she said that was not acceptable (to her) to obtain residencia.

On the way back to San Miguel from Alicante, my gestor said if I’d have had 7000€ in my account for the previous three months, I would have qualified for residencia.

On returning to San Miguel, I transferred an amount of money to my Spanish bank account which has been there ever since earning no interest.

Fortunately, I transferred more over 10000€. The gestor I am using telephoned me a few days ago and told me appointments will be starting again shortly AND, if the previous three months (DWP) pension credits are not showing in my Spanish bank account from the date of my appointment, then a minimum amount of 9000€ at all times over the same previous three month period is one of the requirements to qualify for residencia.

To summarise, what is currently needed to obtain residencia on the date of your appointment is: the previous three months (DWP) credits into a Spanish bank account and current award letter from the DWP (if a retiree) or a minimum 9000€ in a Spanish bank account over the same period.  S1 form or twelve month private health care policy. A valid passport, two passport size photos, your current padrón and three months Spanish bank account statements showing the running total down the right hand side of said statement

That is ideal feedback, although it's a shame you encountered that official - thank you.

Proof yet again that the law says one thing, but the police - who one would expect to comply with the law - say another thing.

When I was at my La Siesta house in January I visited the office in Torrevieja that (according to my local solicitor) would arrange pardon registration for me.  I was hoping that this would lead to the issue of a free bus pass (I am 67).

I was told, quite bluntly, that I could NOT be registered on the pardon unless I was a resident.  Several people on this forum have mentioned having the pardon at the time of their application for residencia.

I am confused!  Do different towns have different rules on this?  There doesn't seem to be definitive list of "what you must have" when applying for residencia.  I know that your posting here is quite clear but it does not accord with what the Torrevieja official told me in January.

You imply that you are non-resident, and as such it would be illegal to register on the padrón:

Sorry, I meant padron, not pardon!

Why then are some, with their lists of things to take to the residencia appointment, mentioning it as if they have that registration already?  Like I said, I'm confused!

You have to obtain it to apply for residency and thats the key not unless seeking residency.

The only way you can legally get on the padrón is as part of a residency application.

You apply for a temporary padrón to support your residency application and, once you've got that, you go back to the town hall and turn it into a full padrón - as explained in my padrón and residency guides.
