To any member of the Forum who might be interested, I have just received an email from Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh informing me that even with an Irish/ E.U. passport I can only stay 90 out of 180 days in any year. I had wanted to rent for 6 months and find that time to buy a holiday home, looks like I need a plan B. Perhaps I should look for 3 month rentals.

Yes, that has always been the rule.

However, if Irish/EU passport holders want to stay permanently they must sign on the foreigners register at the police station within the first 90 days. That will lead onto other requirements.......

Yes but if you leave Spain for just one day doesn't it reset the clock for Irish (EU) passport owners?.....and who would know if you don't get your passport stamped. Lots of UK passport owners had no problem with this when the UK was in the EU.

Rent for 6 months, you'll probably get a better deal. Just don't stay longer than 183 days.

If you are genuinely just looking for somewhere to base yourself while you find a permanent residence, I am sure you don’t need 6 months to do that. You will find somewhere much sooner than that. The 90 day rule does apply to  the Republic of Ireland citizens. I’m sure you can find somewhere, after prior research it only took me a month. Best of luck, you could always leave Spain prior to the 90 days, and pop back again after a few days, pretty sure your 90 days starts again. But if you are genuinely looking for a permanent property you don’t need 6 months to find one.

Consulates do not send such emails randomly so presumably you must have been in contact for some reason?

In the real world whatever the rules say EU passport holders can stay as long as they please and nobody will care a fig or bother them.

Popping across a border for a day is a pointless waste of time.

Some people can take far longer than 6 months to find their perfect place so it's not fair to project one's own feelings on the subject onto others.

We stay 6 months per year. We both have EU passports. We do however be out of Spain for a week (or more) every 90 days but that is out of necessity rather than to break our 90 day stay.

Friends of ours took 18 months to find their property, they literally viewed 100’s.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Darro, thanks for your input !!! Yes, I contacted the Consulate as I wanted to know the official position on the 90 day rule. Thanks a lot for your input.

Hello deztote

I made my property decision in 3 weeks!

After doing my homework in UK, I came & stayed in the area that  I liked & spent one week deciding that it was the correct location for me ........only then did I look at properties - many,! I decided at the end of week 2 & even had time to give power of attorney to someone to act for me, before my flight back, I eventually  moved here 6 months later

I am still here  after 18years -- so I think I got it right ha!

Cheers

No hard & fast rules. It’s excellent that you found your home so quickly.

We’ve being going to Spain for nigh on 30 years and built a new property in an area we liked, ended up selling it before we ever used it ! … but truth be told we are happy to be wanderers and enjoy that side of life, it just suits us.

The only property we’ve kept long term & live in is one we built in 1995 to our spec, and wouldn’t sell it for anything……. but it’s not in Spain.

Different folks for different strokes and no one size fits all.

Love Spain and always look forward to returning.
