Thanks Steve but it's actually Torrevieja that I'm considering moving to.

I actually started off thinking I'd move to Denia or Xavier but as much of my profit goes to animal charities, I can't stomach the idea of the bull terrorisation that goes on in these areas in the name of entertainment. It's the bit about my heritage that repulses me.

So I'm looking at maybe Torrevieja, Santa Pola or going further south to Mojacar.

It wasn't my intention to try to persuade you to thinking about Benidorm but a response to John's view.

My sister lived close by to Torrevieja so I have spent some time in the area and I could understand why you may like Santa Pola as its a beautiful place.

Thanks. That sort of life is definitely not what I want.

I have lived in Spain for over 18 years and have never had anything personal stolen such as bag, watch, phone, purse or jewellery.

There isn't much bull fighting goes on in Spain these days.   I have lived here in Almoradi for over 18 years and have never seen any bull fighting advertised in the area and don't know of any bull rings that are used for such activities either - many have been destroyed or made into tourist attractions.

I understand they still run the bulls into the sea. It's not bull fighting as such but still despicable.

Thanks Villas. One episode of animal cruelty is one too many in my book.

I think John has given a very exaggerated view of life in Benidorm. It's one of the safest cities in Spain and if you look at Benidorm on John's own recommended link you will see its far less crime ridden than Torrevieja and residents are less frightened to go out at night.

I've lived in Benidorm for 10 years, I'm 73 and my wife and I feel far safer going out at night than I ever did in parts of the UK and areas of Spain including Torrevieja. We've never been accosted, robbed or been "hugged"...

...

Safety index: Torrevieja = 61.16

                    Benidorm = 69.65

O= poor

100= Good

I'll second what tebo53 has said unfortunately, where people have worked hard and paid for their valuable possessions there's always some lowlife who hasn't and wants to take them from you, but like John123456 states you have to be vigil and don't look like a victim.

Keep safe everyone

Hi,

I'm 50 and my partner and I have had a holiday home in North Torrevieja for the last 10 years. We are just down from hotel Masa so I think that's the area you're being recommended. It's a terrace on a small Urb, so a communal pool.

I've stayed here solo, with girlfriends, and with my family - I have never felt unsafe. We love the area, but if we were going to live here, like you we'd want more space and a private pool - though actually just having the garden to potter in is what we miss!

I don't think there are many villas of the size you mention in this Torrelemata area, not particularly reasonably priced anyway. We look to La Siesta and Los Balcones, perhaps the Torretas when 'house hunting' as these seem to have more space for less money.

I think even in Torrevieja centre it's quite family oriented, the clubs are in their own areas, so you would be unlucky to be a target. The only thing I saw (once) was someone doing the leaflets on the table thing (to pick up a phone) but we clocked it and no harm done. A general awareness for opportunistic theft is useful, as others have said.

You shouldn't have a problem with wifi, we use dvblab but there's loads out there. We have wifi cameras and they always seem to be connected.

Best of luck! Helen

We moved to Spain due to the high levels of crime in our village in UK and the lack of interest from the police. After having our home broken into in UK while we were away for a week, my wife could not longer regard it as a home but it became just a house.

We've live in 3 areas here, near Villamartin, Torrevieja and now Quesada. Yes, in every place we've heard of break-ins, generally the opportunistic type, but have never been a victim of it in the 20 years we've had a holiday home and permanent residency (for the last 14 years).

We hear more here as there are many sites like this which people report things whereas we didn't have such a thing in UK. Looking at the amount of crime in our UK village (about a third the size of Quesada) and the level of crime was shocking compared to here.

Always nasty when it happens to you or people you know but these scumbags are everywhere. The only incident I've had was when a Lithuanian tried to take my wallet in a supermarket about 8 years ago (well, he jumped into a car with Lithuanian plates so guessing his nationality) but I was aware of what he was trying to do by diverting my attention and he didn't succeed.

My response to tebo53 was as follows and is on the first page but I don't think you read it before joining the conversation:

Unfortunately tebo53, my and my partner's experiences in Benidorm are not exagerrated but have occurred and we have copies of the police reports to substantiate these. You and I have both provided responses to several posts on this forum where visitors in particular have 'lost' their wallets and or mobile phones. Our responses to these have mostly agreed the phones and wallets were more than likely stolen. As I said in my original response being vigilant and keeping a close 'eye' on personal possessions is important. This, of course, does not only apply to Benidorm or Spain but where ever we may travel in the world. For example, my partner and I have also been the victims of a mugging in Honolulu many years ago but this didn't deter us from returning - we have been there on 12 occasions. I love Benidorm and to be quite honest having travelled the world it is one of the best places to spend our twilight years. Perhaps the crime figures may be a little higher in Benidorm if all incidents were reported to the police. I am confident that quite a number of those lost wallets and mobile phones never quite make it to the police station.
