As others have said, any town or city in any part of the world is going to have what you would consider rich/poor areas (either in absolute terms or relative terms or both!).

In the UK, going back many years I was assaulted (well, that's what the individual was charged and convicted of but I wouldn't have called it anywhere near that), I've also been the victim of fraud (someone successfully got HMRC to provide a refund in my name for a self-assessment tax return I hadn't submitted).

In Spain, we've been burgled once in 8 years - and while I don't want to do any victim blaming, that was due in part to a degree of forgetfulness by myself (due to having had one to many vino!).

I don't feel much difference in terms of my personal safety when wandering around here than I did in the UK or anywhere else in the world really and I'm a frequent traveller. The only place I felt notably safer was when I worked in Switzerland but the price of a pint was also criminal there!

Hi,

I'm 50 and my partner and I have had a holiday home in North Torrevieja for the last 10 years. We are just down from hotel Masa so I think that's the area you're being recommended. It's a terrace on a small Urb, so a communal pool.

I've stayed here solo, with girlfriends, and with my family - I have never felt unsafe. We love the area, but if we were going to live here, like you we'd want more space and a private pool - though actually just having the garden to potter in is what we miss!

I don't think there are many villas of the size you mention in this Torrelemata area, not particularly reasonably priced anyway. We look to La Siesta and Los Balcones, perhaps the Torretas when 'house hunting' as these seem to have more space for less money.

I think even in Torrevieja centre it's quite family oriented, the clubs are in their own areas, so you would be unlucky to be a target. The only thing I saw (once) was someone doing the leaflets on the table thing (to pick up a phone) but we clocked it and no harm done. A general awareness for opportunistic theft is useful, as others have said.

You shouldn't have a problem with wifi, we use dvblab but there's loads out there. We have wifi cameras and they always seem to be connected.

Best of luck! Helen

Hi Helen,

Thanks so much for your advice. I'm eager to start my new life so it's heart-warming to know that this can work.

x

Thanks for this insight. Switzerland is cold so that rules that out! Safety is a priority - otherwise I might as well stay in Britian. x

I have lived in Spain for over 18 years and have never had anything personal stolen such as bag, watch, phone, purse or jewellery.

Excellent news! x

I'll second what tebo53 has said unfortunately, where people have worked hard and paid for their valuable possessions there's always some lowlife who hasn't and wants to take them from you, but like John123456 states you have to be vigil and don't look like a victim.

Keep safe everyone

Yes, that's true. Thanks!

Morning,  we live in benijofar which is very quiet but has everything you need within walking distance. Beach 20 minutes, la zenia 20 minutes, habaneras15 minutes for shopping centers, bus to Torry 4 times a day, theatres x 4 benijofar, rojales,San fulcienco and Torry all within a 20 minute radius.plenty of walking, cycling groups and lots of entertainment depending on what you want. New builds are being built and an international neighbourhood is being established and I find the area very friendly and supportive. My neighbours are German,Belgian,Polish and Norwegian and we all support each other, all young at heart retirees.

Hi you could not do better than to move to Campoverde which is just six miles inland from Pinar de Horadada. On Campoverde there is an all the year  community, a good selection of age groups from young to old and many activities.it is approximately forty minutes south of Torrevieja. x

"But drunk people everywhere"

Thats not been my experience and I've lived here 10 years!! You must have been visiting the wrong area. Benidorm is one of the most visited holiday destinations in Spain outdoing Torrevieja by far.

Benidorm has amazing beaches and the picturesque "old town" also is rated safer for overall safety and satisfaction than Torrevieja.....
