As you won't have a car there are better places to be than Villamartin.
First of all the airport bus goes direct to Torrevieja then local and longer distance routes span out from there. The further away you are from the airport, the more it is going to cost especially for early morning or late arrivals and departures which could mean having to get a taxi.
Again, the further you are away from major centres such as Torrie, Alicante, Elche etc. then the more patchy the service. From Torrevieja the routes are concentrated along the coast and inland along the CV905 to places such as the Habaneras shopping mall, La Siesta, the Torretas etc and La Zenia is also well served due to the Boulevard.
You need to be close to a supermarket that you would use. I like Mercadona and do the odd bits at Overseas supermarkets, Tesco and Masymas. If I was closer to a Carrefour I would also shop there. I have tried other supermarkets and bought the odd thing but would struggle to get a full week's shop in them but this is my own personal preference. It will be important, especially when the heat ramps up.
Most of us like to spend time at the beach and promenade and it is much nicer if you don't have to plan to the nth degree to get there and back or have a long hike in the blazing sun, especially if uphill.
Have a look at places such as Guardamar, La Mata and the immediate outskirts of Torrevieja or south along the N332 like Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca.
If you had a car then Villamartin could be ideal for you.

This is an interesting thread villamartin is it a good place to live .

Hi Cheryl, thank you so much for all that great information, we have not fully decided on Villamartin, a lot depends on the facilities and amenities, so it is great to get all this feedback from everyone.

Hi Roxy

I live in Villamartin with my husband and we don’t have a car so rely on buses or walk everywhere. I love the area but if I was doing it again would probably have chosen to be closer to a supermarket. I’m a 10 minute walk from the plaza and supermarket there is great (especially the butchery) but selection is limited so we choose to do our “big shop” in Mercadona at La Fuente”. It’s a good 25 minute walk -in summer it’s a killer with bags and we can’t buy ice, ice cream etc as it would melt. Also carrying water, beers etc is very tiring. I know this seems small but if you’re doing this week in week out 🥵

If you want more info about the different areas please feel free to pm me-being a non driver certainly gives us a different perspective and means we get to see a lot of the area lol.

Alcampo hypermarket in La Zenia delivers locally for 7€ so you can order heavy and frozen items online and have them delivered to your door the next day. They were a lifesaver in lockdown. Mercadona and Carrefour also deliver. Walking in summer can be a nightmare for me with the heat but I cycle, a lot of folks are opting for electric bikes. I live in Villamartin now but used to live in Torrevieja close to the town centre. Both areas are great to live in, Torrevieja has more going for it in the way of fiestas, shops, transport etc but Villamartin is quieter which suits me now. La Zenia Boulevard has made a huge difference to shopping. I loved the years I spent in Torrevieja and went to all the parades and exhibitions, music on the beach, the fabulous carnaval, firework displays etc. and said that I'd never live in Villamartin - a place I love and have done since I moved here. I miss walking along Torrevieja prom in the summer every evening, I don't do it often now because the fight for parking wore me down. The seafront walks in La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca are lovely day and evening, I drive there and it's easy to park. If I had somewhere to store an electric bike I'd get one. To me the major difference is that Torrevieja, a Spanish town with a multi cultural leaning with about a 50-50 Spanish to mixed foreigner population, provides more municipal services - there's a social security office, more police and emergency services, library, concert hall often with a bus service, free music evenings, fiestas, whereas Villamartin has always had more British and Irish residents, although that's changing a bit now, and is more geared towards non-Spanish bars and restaurants and car drivers. That being said, I absolutely love living in Villamartin and am glad to have had the opportunity to live in Torrevieja. (And other places but not around here.)

Thank you Myra, that is really good information to have, especially regarding the supermarkets who deliver.

We hope to visit soon to view some properties it's great to have all this information before we go.

Hello I would agree with the advise give by others.

I would advise strongly the area around La Mata. I am here for 22 years in The Los Leandros urbanisation.  This area has everything.

I would advise renting first.

Good  luck with your decision.
