Has anyone who has received residency but stayed under 180days so still a Uk fiscal resident, driven their Uk car and insured it legally in Uk to use when in Uk?. Do you claim to be a Uk resident on insuring or Spanish? Also have you driven same car to Spain to use during time there?

Please no nasty comments, if you have nothing constructive to say troll another thread

Thankyou in advance for any information

Pauline.

I hold a Spanish licence and am a named driver on son-in-law's UK reg car in the UK, as far as I know without problem.

Regarding the specifics of your question, I would contact your UK insurer and explain your exact circumstances and requirements. This will then give them the opportunity to decide whether they want your business under these terms. If they don't, I'm confident that there will be other insurers who will.

Not strictly true, as a Spanish resident you can drive a Spanish registered vehicle in the UK so long as it is not registered in your name in Spain, and same the other way around, at the moment.

"received residency but stayed under 180days so still a Uk fiscal resident"

You make it sound like residency is some sort of mix-n-match personal choice which of course it isn't.

Some very sensible statements on this thread.

It has always made me smile a bit when folks who have been in Spain a year or two ask me "What are the advantages of becoming resident?"

My answer is "Well, stopping you from being illegal has got to be top of the list really"!!

You are so right Geoff, thats what I,m trying to ensure. Legally I know I can wait upto 2yrs to change driving licence, but seems no way can I drive a UK reg car as owner in Uk in Spain. If owned by someone else yes if that owner is in car too(but I own it and I dont have a "someone else" to own and be with me when driving. As to driving our UK cars in Uk as Spanish residents, well I,ll take Kimmy,s advice and contact the insurers direct. My posting the question was to see if any people out there had discovered a way a company which they had set up became the owners of the vehicle and got around it that way to drive in either country.

If you can fulfill the Uk tax residency tests with correct timelines etc and ties in the Uk too, a person who is resident in Spain can still be classed as a UK tax resident with fiscal interests, being more domiciled in Uk than Spain, but still legally living in Spain upto 6mnths.
