Sheila I totally agree with you.I will not be buying a property on the English side because despite being English born,I am alarmed at the mad decision made by my fellow countrymen. My birth family are all typical Anglo Saxon from the Saxon Kingdom of Wessex where they have always lived. And,I can ...

...believe,all think that life will go on  in their comfortable world just as before. It won´t for our children & grandchildren after Brexit. At the time of the original referendum in the 1970´s when we elected to join the EU,can anyone remember the state of the UK?At that time we lived in that lovely little place Rothley, near Leicester where that little girl´s family,Maddie now live.We donated food to the families who were without, our Chancellor of the Exchequer had to go for a loan because Britain was Broke. We have short memories obviously. My family came here in the mid 1980´s to run a business which was before Spain entered the EU.Poverty was even worse than what I had seen in UK.So they were keen to join a big group of European countries & since that time I can see what a tremendous advantage they have gained in doing so.Until retirement I had ,fortunately, run successful businesses both in UK & here. Therefore I hope I am still sensible enough to see the bigger picture.Don´t listen to those who go on about how people came & worked in Europe before & will do so again.Yes indeed as we did.But it was very hard even buying a licensed business as a cash buyer. Now there will be the fact that the British voted to leave the "Club".Do you really believe that employers in the EU will welcome our young job seekers with open arms,& don´t forget how poorly we are equipped with foreign language skills.

Hi Dogsbody,

I was born in early 50's and raised in the N-E of England. I can remember the 70's as the days of Labour governments crippling the economy, which is why Dennis Healey had to go cap in hand to the IMP. I remember working 3 days weeks under Ted Heath's government because of union action bringing the country to a halt. The Thatcher government was responsible for clearing up the mess and getting our financial policies back to the real world. I think your wearing EU rose tinted glasses if you think they were responsible.

I do not remember there being any significant poverty, either in the N-E or in Hertfordshire where I worked for most of the 70's. Must have been different in rural Leicestershire.

I'm sure that the UK will adapt to the new reality of working with the EU and we will prosper together.

Good luck with your move to Scotland. I would not put too much faith in getting back into the EU through that route though but you never know.

  Aitch.

Well said indeed . I hope you find somewhere amazing in the Borders . Find time to visit glorious  north Northumberland , where we used to live and I hope you still manage to find some sunshine in Spain. You sound as if you have led an interesting life working in Spain for such a long time. ...

...Enjoy your future in Scotland . Good luck for the future . Kind regards . Sheila ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

Quite why you are bringing politics into someone’s request for help into buying a house in the Borders is beyond me.
However I think you are the one living in cloud cuckoo land, Thatcher brought ruin to the  NE by bringing down the unions who were fighting for their lives in the pits and other heavy industries, like the steel works and shipbuilding. Hers was a deliberate  strategy , she said so herself, and working class communities and pit towns and villages were left with nothing and they never recovered. I lived through the violence of the Miners Strike and the brutality shown by the authorities was hideous and it was engineered  and promoted by Thatcher herself

And you are wrong about the EU, we were desperate to be a member . it was Tory party who took Britain into the EU and Thatcher was a staunch supporter of our belonging and voted for it.!

Leave your slanted , distorted political and patronising views out of a request for help. It was unnecessary.

I’ve no doubt that the UK will manage just fine outside the European fold. I’d have preferred we didn’t leave (& I voted to stay) but I’m firmly in the camp of abiding by the referendum result and subsequent ballots since 2016.

Not so sure Scotland would exist without swinging on to England’s apron strings, and to boot imagine the Scottish euro notes with Sturgeons face on it....... yuck !

Believe me, if they’re silly enough to vote out of the union then be damn sure the Bank of England won’t be tied to them.

But correct, this isn’t thread for such matters.

Hi Sheila,

I was answering the points raised by Dogsbody in his post. Perhaps you should read them again. Maybe also reread your post, the one including the comment:

^I would definitely be buying on the Scottish side in the hope that they do gain independence and get back in the EU^  What is that if not politics?

Interesting that you think I have slanted, distorted, patronising views because they are different to yours.

It’s not there as the Convent School but it is the Catholic primary and high school now. I taught at the Duchess’s  High and Lindisfarne Middle until 2009 .

...orum,so can you help please?

I lived in Cumbria for 29 years and spent a lot of time travelling in the borders both working and vacational. A lot depends on the size of the town you are prepared to live in. If you might be happy in a smaller town take a look at Langholm (very competitive house prices and drop dead gorgeous). Coldstream, Kelso, Melrose and spots in between are all very attractive (IMHO) as is Moffat. Good luck and disregard the politics, :)
