I was speaking to a lady today, a UK resident, who own property on the Costa del Sol. We were chatting about the logistics of getting your dog to Spain and she said that anyone with an NIE number can obtain a Spanish passport for their dog, it’s a one off fee of €100 and they have to have an annual rabies jab which she has done in Spain. She said it’s much cheaper than obtaining it in the UK . I have never heard of this option before and felt it might be of general interest

Hi Julietony

We have lived in Spain for last 34 years or so and during that time have owned 8 dogs including our present rescue one. I cannot ever recall having to pay any cash for Dog passports, except maybe a small admin fee. Vets here from our experience are fab people. Charges are tiny compared to UK but quality of service normally excellent. Yes, rabies jabs needed annually.

If any other info you might like, you would be welcome to PM me.

Cheers !

Adrian

Hi JulieTony,

Correct, you do not need to be resident in Spain to obtain a Pet Passport here, so long as you have an NIE.  There's actually a similar thread running at the moment, from a non-resident member, which you may find useful:

Rabies vaccine advice please

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim, this might vary by region / vet but we didn’t need an NIE to obtain a pet passport. We don’t have an NIE - all we were asked for were an address (we used our temporary rental address) and contact phone number(s).   If I recall correctly one of the phone numbers had to be Spanish.  Nobody looked very closely at either the address or phone numbers.

I appreciate that things may have changed since we last got a pet passport 15 months ago so worth checking.

Hi Bob,

We adopted our dog in Spain and the rescue organised the pet passport and microchip.  As the named owner, I had to provide my NIE for registration.  Perhaps an NIE is only required from Spanish residents 🤔

Kind regards,

Kim

It’s the best thing since sliced bread. It cost us £500 altogether in uk when we first drove out and loads of worry as I knew people that were refused at the dock because of slight mistake in paperwork. We went to vetapet in quesada and it was 97 euros in total for both dogs passports and jabs. Used it next time at channel tunnel and was a doddle

I think people get confused about pet passport ! It is actually a booklet with a corresponding number to the chip in your dog, also for recording the vaccinations necessary to allow the animal to be transported between countries. The rabies being the most important. A photo of the dog is not required.
