Hi. Myself, husband and 16 yr old son are moving over in Jan.

I have years of experience of cook/chef/small catering business owner.

My husband is a mechanic and garage manager here in the UK and would like to find something similar,  although he will do anything. He also is pretty good in a kitchen, he is my Ka at events :)

My questions are.... Where would be the best place to move for jobs?

We are looking for a  long term let that will allow my sons 🐶 dog. Any advice would be appreciated.

Wondering if we should do a month holiday let while we look to find a new home??

Thanks

Clair, Julian, Kyle and 🐶 Stanley

Hardly any proper work available for non Spanish speaking Brits.

There is little to no demand for the skills you and your husband have. Full time proper jobs with a contract don't exist as it costs a lot for employers to put you on the books.

Therefore you would have to both go self employed which comes at a high monthly cost as you will both need private healthcare insurance .

You will need a lot of savings behind you as it's highly unlikely you would both earn enough to cover your monthly  living costs. Moving to Spain and finding work to sustain a lifestyle is a pipe dream.

I apologise for what I am going to say now as it sounds harsh. Leave your son in the UK. Bringing him to Spain at 16 with no language skills is a really bad move. Youth unemployment in Spain sits at 40%. He won't find work anything he does will be sporadic and crappy.  He will stand a much better chance in the UK

No, no, no, no and no.
If you are lucky, you may all get summer jobs washing up in boiling hot kitchens for 5 euro an hour, but anything else and you need really good Spanish language skills and even then there are thousands of Spaniards out of work who will come before you in the pecking order. Setting up a business is full of red tape and likely to fail.
There is a reason that there are many retired ex-pats here because we have cashed in on our UK property, bought cheaper ones here, have a little nest egg and have pensions to live on and DO NOT NEED TO WORK. Sorry for the capitals.
At 16, I think I would have been so excited at the prospect of living in Spain, by 17, I would be back in the UK.
Please don´t think we are being party poopers, but, for example, if your son wanted to learn to drive, it would all be in Spanish and have to be with a professional instructor, no practicing with Mum and Dad permitted. Most other British teenagers here will have been through the Spanish education system and will be bilingual. This is not the land of milk and honey.

Have a look at these two sites as they may have answers to some of the queries that you have.

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain for general queries regarding bureaucracy, etc.

N332 for anything to do with driving in Spain and is in collaboration with Guardia Civil officers for English speaking people.

Although hard to face you have been given very good advice by the other forum members.

Changing countries is difficult especially with children who will need time to settle. This is not the place to try to make a new life. I would suggest you look for jobs abroad while you still live in the UK. Meanwhile you should learn the language.

Good luck with What ever you do.

Ignore the naysaters - there is always work and if you have a history of self employment, then you have a good start. It is hardwork and if you want to earn real money, then your own business is the way forward.

You have to expect in expat or tourist areas, is not going to be the same employment wise as Barcelona, or Madrid big cities - opportunities and type of jobs around are not as plentiful, but work hard and smart & you can make money anywhere.

I've been here 15 years, my Spanish is still not as good as it could be, I have managed to earn a living by running a small business or two, but I work hard and have a history of self employment / entrepreneur, which helps.

Don't open a bar! If your husband wants to open a garage or a classic car restoration business - then let me know!

Best place for jobs - Alicante City, Valencia etc. But however good your Spanish is, the locals will always employ 'one of their own' over a Brit, so unless a specific job which has the requirement of a natural English speaker, not sure how far up the employment chain you will get  - my personal thoughts and experience has led me to build/manage a few local businesses - which conveniently I had experience with in the UK, so do what you know -  but learn the local market, it is different to the UK. Many expats do not have fortunes to spend and most of the Spanish (locally in my business experience), are not exactly big spenders - pick something that you know & will appeal to local audience.

There is always work in bars and kitchens, you can ear a reasonable (not UK reasonable) wage as a chef/cook - there's usual bar or restaurant work, but its hard and at €6? an hour odd for waiting staff + tips (hopefully).  Plenty of estate agents about and jobs going there, but don't fall into we'll pay you nothing, but give you commission trap.
