Hello, after renovating our holiday home for 18 months we've realised we'd like to move there full time. We'd be coming over on later this year after selling our current home in Essex

Need a little advice/costs on importing a couple of cars with us though. I know rhd isn't perfect but there's option for us as one of the cars is an audi 2014 car specd to suit our needs with 2disabled children and the other is a 1967 classic mgb I inherited from my late parents.

I'll be using a removal firm to do the move our personal belongings, am I right in thinking in import tax/vat isn't relavent as we're becoming residents?

If you are all UK passport holders you will need visas to be able to live in Spain permanently. Do you have a Non Lucrative Visa? Owning property in Spain does not give rights to live here permanently.

You will need to make the initial application at the Spanish consulate in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. You will need to prove that you have an annual income of €50,400 for a family of four and private healthcare paid for a full year. There are several other documents you need to produce and some translated into Spanish.

Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly.

Thanks Steve, were going to use a spainish law firm/solicitor to arrange the documents/visa so hopefully that'll be straight forward 🤞

Your cars will attract import taxes. The age, Cadastral value (what the Spanish government thinks your car is worth) and the pollution rating determine the tax.

In 2018/2019, after having been granted Residency, we imported a normal car and a "classic" sports car. Since then the B-word has apparently worsened the taxes (with VAT now applying).

Re "classic" cars .... the advice that we received was that "classic car insurance" in Spain only covers driving to/from/at classic car events, so if you just want to buzz around in your MGB when the fancy takes you, it needs normal road tax, insurance etc.

Is your Audi petrol or diesel (and if diesel, is it EU6 compliant) ?

Spain is making noises about ULEZ zones in provincial cities, so worth checking up on this.

Spain (urbanaccessregulations.eu)

DGT environmental quality seal - Get your DGT environmental quality seal at Correos

The Audi is diesel and also eu6 compatible.

The mgb is obviously petrol, interesting you say about classic insurance for show us etc. I would want to just go for a spin so maybe normal insurance.

Initial visa applications are not acceptable through a third party, you will need to make the initial application personally. Spanish solicitors will take your money knowing that they cannot help. Please contact the Spanish Consulate in the UK for advice.

Hi Bopster,

A couple of other links that may be helpful for you:

https://www.gov.uk/taking-vehicles-out-of-uk

https://upsticks.es/spanish-car-registration/

In the second link, note the comment about Special Registrations Tax that, "In some cases, if the registration is due to a change of residency, this tax can be waived as it’s your right to bring your vehicle with you as part of your personal belongings."

Kind regards,

Kim
