If you still use Windows 7 you may have seen popups from Microsoft warning you support for Win 7 ends January 2020, I am still hopeful Microsoft will relent and provide support for longer given over 37% of Windows PC users are still using Win 7. However if you do wish to change to Win 10 you do not have to pay rip off shop prices, search the web for Win 10 digital licenses, these can be had for as little as £19.99, I have provided a link below to a site I have bought digital licences from before. Note: these will are downloaded as an ISO file so you will also need ISOTOUSB to convert the ISO file to a bootable medium, link to ISOTOUSB below. PS: softwaregeeks provide support and instruction on using ISOTOUSB etc etc.

Original post above, text below added 08.20 am Saturday 22nd June.

Unfortunately I feel I must edit this post which was initially posted to help the less PC literate who are still running Win 7 and are now receiving Microsoft popups stating support for their product will end shortly. It was never my intention to go into detail on how to upgrade the hardware in a PC, it was never my intention to try and advise those who do not need advice.

The thread has been hijacked by one specific site user who has called into question mostly everything I have said, I have posted links to Microsoft where they explain the validity of the digitial licences supplied on ebay which this user suggested people buy, I have provided links to respected sites that explain the benefits of a clean install rather than taking the Win 10 upgrade route. Unlike some I always try and qualify what I say by supplying links rather than expecting people to bow & accept my every word.

It would appear one specific site user is in denial of the advice given by Microsoft and anyone else that may hold an alternative viewpoint, he states he worked for 30 years as an IT professional with a multi billion dollar company, he does not go into detail about what exactly his position was, stating you’re an IT professional could mean he was on the bottom rung of the ladder and off course it could mean he was a top flight engineer , this kind of reminds of a chap I met who said he was a fuel distributor for a multi national oil company, he turned out to be a petrol pump attendant, and no I have nothing against petrol pump attendant’s. As for working for a multi billion pound company I assume this to mean he was a small cog in a big wheel.

It’s unfortunate this site has a very small minority of users that dislike others viewpoints, I understand why this thread was hijacked, most probably it has something to do with the “Unexpected consequences of Brexit” thread raging on this site, tit for tat comes to mind, see link to this thread below, worth a look if you have any interest in brexit.

Might I suggest this thread has descended  into basically a rather petty attempt to denounce anything I post on here, this speaks volumes for the character of this person but sure you can decide that for yourselves.

Now I have edited my initial post I see no point in replying to any other posts by this person, quite obviously he knows best and is closed to any opposing thoughts or viewpoint hence it’s a complete waste of time.

Switch to Linux/Ubuntu and save a fortune. Its a different world but easy to handle. Forget about paying for what you can use for a limited time and send Microsoft to hell, they already make more money than they can ever spend. It's the modern version of good old arcade pinballs, put a nickel in get 2 minutes of bells and lights flashing and go away with nothing, or in best case a bonus game.

Peter, it is certainly possible to get a free upgrade from Microsoft, I did not mention it as I would not recommend that option, the free upgrade Microsoft pushed out a few years ago played havoc with many PCs and left many with neither Win 10 or Win 7.

This is why I would always recommend a clean install rather than the free upgrade option, either way, it's up to the individual to choose.

I was unaware you could buy Win 10 licence on eBay, I do not use eBay due to the fact I do not fully trust it or the sellers, that's just my thoughts off course. Do the sellers give support as well ?.

Peter, you are quite obviously more than PC literate, many are not.

If you fancy a play with Linux get and old PC and install it. Play around and break it. Reinstall it again. I learned Linux that way.

Windows software has a Linux equivalent. Word - Open Office (has a problem with complex word documents). Photoshop - Bring out the GIMP. Adobe Illustrator - Inkscape, Desktop publishing there’s Scribus.  I’ve used Linux and Desktop publishing software in the past as an experiment. Went thought the print process and colour management better than Windows.

One of my favourite operating systems is UNIX. Still have a few SGI workstations in my office. “It’s a UNIX system I know this” Jurassic Park.

In UNIX or Linux set up an Admin account then create a user account for daily use. Thats the first step to system security.

I could imagine those that are less PC literate might struggle with that, purely my thoughts off course.

Or it could be a site problem, will be back on later should you wish to continue with the "attitude", judging by the advice you gave on metal detecting yesterday I am not the only one that's noticed or mentioned this.

Unlike some I do not comment on things or issues I know nothing about.

As for the metal detecting post you will see the person that initiated the post was less than enthralled with Peter's reply, might I ask if you and Peter are a couple, I ask as you appear to go hand in hand on this site.
