We have just been through the process. tea town has restaurants and bars open all year. Altea Hills you need to go into town or to Altea La Vella. We found a compromise in Mascarat where we have 8 minute walk to Greenwich Marina that has half a dozen or so restaurants and bars open all year. Alternatively we can take cabs to Altea la Vella or Calpe or Altea old town all less than 10 minutes. Everyone has their own opinions but we like that we can walk to the beach or restaurants or take a cab elsewhere. We could happily live in the Old town or somewhere half way like La Olla where you could walk into town but we love Mascarat. We liked Altea Hills but the above and the fact its a bit colder in winter due to altitude swung it for us. Dont think you will go wrong either way.

Hi Steve,
I just wanted to ask you about Don Cayo. I have noticed there's an apartment up for sale at the moment which looks really nice and after you mentioned you had a property there for 12 years, could you tell me a bit about the complex please. How far is it from Altea town, can I walk there? Are there any shops near by? Overall would you say it is a better choice than Altea Hils?
Kind regards
Debra

Hi Debra,
It's like the Hollywood Hills round Don Cayo, it's absolutely stunning. My apartment was in Block 2, overlooking the 7th green. There are 3 blocks now, all lovely apartments. If you buy there get one at the top because the trees on the golf course are getting high, blocking views from some lower ones. There are further developments down by the first tee, all very nice. You can walk down the hill into Altea la Vieja where there are shops, bars and restaurants but it's a very steep hill and I don't think you'd want to do that very often in the heat. You'll end up using the car every time. Altea is a long walk from there. Unless you're a fitness fanatic it won't happen. I think if you choose that location for the beauty it has you have to accept you will be reliant on a car at all times.
It's 10 years since I drove into Altea Hills Urb so can't really comment on that but I'm pretty sure the same applies.
Coming on holiday is so different to permanent living. An apartment that's a perfect getaway is often not the best place to live permanently. But, saying that, plenty people live in these locations so it's very much a case of personal preference.
Best regards, Steve

Oh thanks Steve, Don Cayo does sound really nice, I can stand a bit of Hollywood glamour! Thankyou for all the tips and information. It is going to be very useful for when I get chance to come out and start viewing.
Kind regards

Hi
We bought our home a couple of years ago. We had fallen in love with Altea many years ago and had frequently visited the town before we committed to buying and living here.
First of all, Altea is a very vibrant lively town with a very cosmopolitan feel, during the summer months many tourists descend on the town to enjoy the many varied and colourful fiestas. During the winter the town is still very much alive with plenty of facilities for residents. Most of the very best restaurants remain open during the winter and it is a delight to toma un café whilst enjoying the warm winter sunshine looking over the sea.
Where to buy
This will of course depend on what use the property will serve you (i.e. holiday home or permanent residence). We retired here from the UK and have no intentions of ever going back to the UK other than for visits. Although we are fairly fit and active, we wanted to ensure that the property we purchased met all the criteria on our property wish list. Property in the town close to amenities, swimming pool, secure parking, well kept grounds and gardens, storage space and plenty of living space. We achieved this and are very happy living in a large apartment in the Garganes area of Altea.
Altea Hills and Mascarat are nice selective areas, however these are residential, mainly holiday homes and the areas feel isolated and cut off from the still very vibrant town of Altea during the winter months.
If you intend retiring to Altea a good tip would be to rent for a while whilst you establish what suits you best before committing to a purchase.
I do hope this helps
Best regards

Hi Jeff, how do you find the shared pool during the Summer? Is it overrun?

Hi Mark
Our pool is ready for use by the end of May until the middle of October. Whilst children are still at school the pool is hardly used. During the school holidays there is more activity in the pool, although this tends to be very late afternoon. We like to swim in the mornings when the water can still refresh you in the summer as by the afternoon the pool can be a bit too warm for us. During our morning 10 am swims, we usaly have the pool to ourselves.
I would assume that not all pools are as underused as ours is and I guess this would relate to where the apartment blocks are located and age range and type of occupants.
There are approximately 50 apartments of which 12% are empty or never used and 10% are rented out during the summer. About 15% have children.
Hope this helps
Jeff
