Hi,

My wife and I are looking to relocate to Spain middle of 2021. We have two sons they both are in university in the UK. We are not at all conversant In spainish but intend to learn it. Our interests for the out doors is to walk a lot and golf. We love meeting people and enjoy just sitting at a cafe or restaurant and enjoying a coffee or glass of wine. I would be grateful if you could give us some foresight as to wether Altea would suit us or would there be a better option to explore. thank you

Hi,

Altea and Albir are very nice towns in a very nice part of the Costa Blanca. I live in Benidorm and have visited both those towns. The are several other towns in that area you would also find interesting.

Have you done the research into the legalities of living in Spain full time? You will need to sign on the foreigners register within the first 90 days of living in Spain and apply for residency. To gain residency you will need to prove that you have enough income to satisfy the authorities you won't become a burden on the state. You will need to show an income (after 1st January 2021) of around €24000 per annum going into a Spanish bank account. You would need to prove that you have full healthcare for every member of your family living with you. If you are not registered for residency before 31st December 2020 you won't be entitled to the S1 healthcare forms which entitles you to healthcare paid for by the UK government. Therefore you sill need to buy private healthcare cover.

I urge you to read "Jim's Guides" that can be found in the drop down menu on the left side of this page or the tab at the top.

Jim's Guides are full of valuable information you need to know about living here legally in Spain.

Everyone on here will promote their own town or region. I'm no different! Check out the northern Costa Blanca - Javea, Denia, Oliva, or a bit inland where I live.

Golf courses at La Sella and Oliva Nova, plenty of others not too far away.

This area is greener and more temperate than 'down sarff'. Depends what you want.

Hi jagatsher

Welcome to the forum!

We have a second home in Moraira, I bit further north of where Steve is, in Benidorm

I suppose it really depends on what you’re looking for. Coast or country, working Spanish town/village???

What I particularly like about where we are is that all the towns along the coast are, to my mind, a bit different. I’ll briefly run north from Altea to Denia. Others may disagree, but these are my thoughts

Altea; longish flat paseo with many restaurants and bars. Pebble beach, absolutely lovely “old town”. Hilly away from the front. Good clothes shopping. Marina. Striking distance to Benidorm

Calpe; two distinct “bays” divided by the majestic penon de ifach. The longish paseos are lined with high rise apartments and hotels. Good fish restaurants. Sand beaches. Hilly away from the front

Moraira; no real paseo, it’s beachside paths or the pavement, small sand main beach. Village feel. Divided by a longish swath of olive trees, which is flat; hilly either side of that. Good restaurants. Golf club. No high rise. Marina

Javea; three distinct parts; old town, port, and the Arenal (small beach). Flatter than other areas. Nice “leg stretch” from the Arenal to the port. Pebble beach at the port end. Good restaurants. Golf club

Denia; working Spanish port. Has a real Spanish feel. No real high rise. Castle, long paseo. Sand beach. Flatter than other areas

Inland, the Jalon valley is beautiful and popular with retirees

Hope this helps 🤪🥂

Hi Angebadge

I have lived in La Mata south of Alicante for many years but know very little about some of the towns to the north and as I dont drive I rarely go in that direction.. Your helpful description was very interesting & good  to know,  which just shows its not just new people  to Spain  who can learn from this forum.

Thank you

Thank you Steve and Angebadge for all the information. I guess we will be spoilt for choices and its truly surprising all that the Costa Blanca has to offer. I guess the best way forward would be to rent a place for 6 months and explore the area before really making a choice where one would like to set roots. Once again thank you all for the inputs its much appreciated.
