Hello Altea Forum,

Hope you're enjoying the current mini heatwave!

I am looking to apply for the NLV in the near future, in order to relocate to Spain, probably in around 3 years from now. I am 63 years old, still working in the UK and plan to continue to work for another 2-3 years. I don't start receiving my full UK state pension for another 4 years, however, I have the necessary funds to self support myself with savings for the first 3-4 years after relocating to Spain.

It's not entirely clear to me when I need to have my Private Healthcare Insurance in place as is required for the NLV visa, so I have a few questions perhaps someone can help answer or advise me on, if possible please?

1. Does my Private Healthcare Insurance have to be in place before I arrive in Spain?

2. Does it need to be provided by/from a UK provider, or a Spanish provider?

3. Any recommendations on providers?

4. Can I apply for my NLV myself or do I need a legal assistance for this process?

If I've missed anything out, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hawkaye.

Hi Hawkaye. I have answered with my opinions after you questions below.

1. Does my Private Healthcare Insurance have to be in place before I arrive in Spain? Yes, paid in full for 1 year with no co-payments(excess).

2. Does it need to be provided by/from a UK provider, or a Spanish provider? Spanish.

3. Any recommendations on providers? ASSSA or iSalud. Ask a broker for a quote, Jennifer Cunningham insurance and Gran Alacant insurance both advertise on this site.

4. Can I apply for my NLV myself or do I need a legal assistance for this process? You can do it yourself to save money or pay for someone to guide you through it. There are many good guides on this site for doing it yourself. Just search NLV in the search box at the top.

Feel free to ask more.

Hi Pedro,

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

It wont likely be for another 3 years before I make my move to relocate to Spain so I presume I should have my Private Health Insurance in place a week or so before hand. Would this be suitable? What do you mean by excess?

I'm happy to stay in touch and to have an understand from you how your NLV process goes. For WhatsApp my number is +447787547921

Best wishes

It’s just insurance excess like you would have on your car or house insurance here in the UK. In Spain it’s called co-payment. So the insurance you need for the NLV needs to be paid for full year and have no excess. You can pay in full before hand so you have it in place when you go for your NLV at the Spanish embassy and most insurance companies will start the cover when you move to Spain.

Thanks Pedro. Do you know how much it costs roughly for a 65 year old male in good health?

Hi John,

Thanks for your message and the information.

I will qualify for my pension when I'm 67. If I relocate before then I will have to take out Health Insurance before and apply for my NLV at that time. If I relocate at 67, I only need to apply for my NLV. Is this correct?

Thanks again.

You can apply for the S1 once you qualify for UK State Pension and up to 90 days prior to your intended move to Spain. To satisfy the health  requirements for the NLV you must register the S1 with the Spanish INSS (Social Security). Full instructions in the links provided earlier. If you apply for the NLV before you qualify for the S1 you will need to have private health insurance in place to satisfy the requirements of your visa application.

I hope this is helpful.
