We have our own Community dish for freesat with fibre optic cable to everyone who joined for the initial installation. No-one has yet said they are having problems with Freesat, but we do have a 1.9m dish.

I did lose a lot of channels last year but my TV and box were old, so after replacing both suddenly I had over 100 channels. Ch 4 is always a problem but Ch 4+1 is fine....

...

Is it worth re-booting the box? checking updates etc.

If you go back to the earlier posts you will note that there are a lot of changes to BBC taking place.  SD and HD channels being moved about.  Until all that is finalised I will not be too worried.  I don't watch BBC very much.  It's hard to find something worth watching.

I have a big dish but it's not helping at present. Other channels are still coming in OK.

Thanks.

As they are being moved to different channel numbers, thats why I suggested a re-boot to find new positions.  What is your guide showing.

BBC 1 is still where it was on 101.

I am always wary of a re-boot in case I loose what I've already got.  Is it worth doing it before all the changes are completed?

Give me a car, tractor or whatever and I'm happy, but give me electronic boxes.................

With a community dish you will all get the BBC regional channel on 101 that was set up in the first place. With your own dish and box you would automatically have your regional channel set up with your postcode being moved to 101 (if using Humax).

Communal dish systems can be set up in both ways you describe.

Either with a communal signal for each house (channel numbers determined by whoever control the system), or with separate cable feeds from the dish to each house for use with a Sky or Freesat (with channel numbers as per their EPGs) or other satellite receiver.

I'm sure you're right! But we always lose channels in winter.

I assumed it was Space Gremlins. My bad!

I guess satellites will disappear with time.

I have 3 dishes pointed at satellites between 7E and 28E. In spring and autumn there are moments lasting about 5 minutes each day for about a week when the signal is lost. This is caused by the sun being directly behind the satellite. The radio noise emitted by the sun causes the noise floor to be increased, reducing or even anulling the noise margin of the LNB/Rx. combo. Antenna size makes no difference as the gain is just as effective on the signal as on the sun generated noise. I watch stuff mainly on 13E and the outages occurr if I remember correctly (Getting old) at about 11.50 and 12.50 spring and autumn respectively. It will be at different times (and dates) on the other satellites due to their orbital positions.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have checked what channels I am getting on my box having found a list of what's HD and what isn't.   I can get a fair number of stations designated as HD, so I assume the problem is not related to the SD turn-off.  There are always some on Freesat that I...

... can't get.  I have had BBC South for a while and I had no idea it had changed or when.. Quest HD is another of my favourites.

I have just switched over to BBC2 and that's working fine.  BBC1 is still off.  I think that's a bit odd, but what do I know?

So sadly I am still open to suggestions.

BBC South went HD when BBC merged BBC South and BBC South Oxford as a cost saving exercise the same will be applied to BBC East and West Midlands shortly. From my experience here in UK we have an old SD sky TV box and just after the national news we get a note telling us that BBC South is no longer available on SD and we need HD. If you get that message then that is the reason. I have a Freesat box in Spain but my local TV engineer here in UK advised against replacement with the new versions as the word on the street is they are not well made and prone to be faulty. He believes there is a new generation coming soon when the chip situation is resolved.

Thanks for keeping the information coming in.  It's all welcome. We are not all experts.

"BBC South went HD when BBC merged BBC South and BBC South Oxford as a cost saving exercise the same will be applied to BBC East and West Midlands shortly."

BBC Oxford closed, and its viewers are sent to BBC South.

BBC East (East) and BBC East (West) also merged to become BBC East.

Closing and merging these micro regions freed up transponder space to make the SD to HD switch possible.

There has been no indication whatsoever from the BBC about BBC East Midlands merging with BBC West Midlands. Considering the large area and population they cover, would not be reasonable.

"advised against replacement with the new versions as the word on the street is they are not well made and prone to be faulty" - various firmware updated have made them quite reliable. A few firmware niggles still. But if there is a "next gen" model coming, then expect it to be made by the same company, so expect the same issues...although so far nothign has been said anywhere about a new version, as the current one is doing just fine
