Good morning and please accept my apologies if I am going over old ground.

I have been advised that, after 1 October. I will no longer be able to drive in Spain using my UK licence and that I have to take a Spanish driving test.  I've also been told that I need to take formal driving tuition before taking the test, which is likely to cost £3,500.00 (that's three t...

Can anybody please either confirm this or suggest an alternative?

Many thanks.

We changed to Spanish driving licence when we received our recidencia. I’m 73 but was not required to take a driving test.

Good luck hope you are sorted soon.

Why do I need a Spanish license we can not exchange it I’ll never pass a test , her Spanish insurance company say it is legal for me to drive a uk plated motorhome with a uk license.

A UK registered vehicle can only stay in any country for 6 months and in any case would have to return for Mot, a Spanish ITV is not appropriate nor legal

Hi Joan,

The rules are different for people who applied for their residency before 31 December 2020 and those who have done so since 1 January 2021.  Prior to Brexit, UK citizens who became Spanish residents had up to 2 years to exchange their driving licence for Spanish, but as the UK is no longer a member of the the EU, UK citizens who become resident in Spain now have only 6 months to make the exchange.  The "extension" period referred to earlier in this thread only applies to those people who registered their intent with DGT to exchange their driving licence before 30 December 2020.  Exchanging your driving licence is not part of the residency application procedure, UK citizens have to apply to do this separately - the Spanish authorities will not tell you this is required, as residents it's our responsibility to find out what is required of us.

Kind regards,

Kim

A uk vehicle can stay in Spain all the time as long as the owner is not a resident and it go’s back for a MOT

For anything to do with driving in Spain I would suggest that you look at the N332 website.   It is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

That’s fine but I can’t find what I want and can not ask a question on N332.

Yes you’re right and our lawyer applied for our Spanish drivers licence so it was a lot easier. Although we did do the eye test and skills test.

Cheers

Cannot see,

1 how it can stay in Spain all the time, and still visit UK for MOT.

2 you can insure a UK registered vehicle that is resident (the vehicle) in Spain, once a vehicle is here for 6 months I think it needs to be changed to Spanish plates and lights etc.

3 than is insured for a full year in the EU.

I cannot see any possibility of this being legal but no one will know until something goes wrong then the house of cards will collapse, and the owner or driver or both will have to pick up the pieces.

You don't need to take a driving test, but you need to take a medical which includes a 'hand eye co ordination' test. You sit in front of a screen and have to keep the dots within the rolling road in front of you. No es muy complicado.

You then take your certificate to the traffic office and swap your UK licence for a Spanish one.

Alternatively, apply for an international licence which lasts for 6 months. Available at main post offices in UK over the counter, I got mine in Bridport.

Hi Madcarew,

"You don't need to take a driving test, but you need to take a medical which includes a 'hand eye co ordination' test. You sit in front of a screen and have to keep the dots within the rolling road in front of you."

You've described how UK citizens used to exchange their driving licence, when the UK was a member of the EU.  However, since Brexit, where UK citizens are now applying for Spanish residency as Third Country nationals, they need to take a Spanish driving test, as there is (currently) no reciprocal arrangement between Spain and the UK to recognise UK driving licences beyond 6 months.

Kind regards,

Kim

Compendo Kim.

But my other offering was the international licence.

And of course a UK licence still entitles the holder to drive a hire car.

Yours etc....
