Spain doesn't require UK citizens to have an International Driving Permit, unless they still have the old-style, paper driving licence.
And yes, a UK licence does still entitle the holder to drive a hire car - or even their own car - in Spain for a maximum of 90 days in a 180 rolling days. However, the OP is a Spanish resident, so they are not permitted to drive in Spain with a UK licence for more than 6 months from the date of their residency being granted.
