Hi Ray,
I don't think it's a surprise that British cuisine has so many foreign influences, given the history of the British Empire, but it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced stewing techniques to the rest of Europe, so it works both ways.

As a kid I was raised on liver and onions, stew, fish & chips. Never had a curry until the late 1980s. All way after the fall of the Empire. The British never really invested in its cuisine like other European countries with empires did. We did that only recently. They probably thought of it as foreign muck (little Englanders/island mentalitye etc)
