Villas quotes: in the UK 'people killed and seriously injured on the country’s roads. There are 7,699 deaths and 344,000 injuries reported this year.

In spain there have been just over 1,000 deaths and about 4,000 injuries on the Spanish roads so far this year. The figures are very different....

However,  after 40 years living and working in Spain it is noticeable how many holidaymakers leave their brains at the borders this thread was started by someone living in Benidorm where there are very few Spanish these days!

It may help some drivers if they had a look at the N332 site for anything to do with driving in Spain.   It is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people and includes an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

i nearly had twins the other day when someone stepped off the sidewalk into the path of wifeys new fancy equiped car...i agree they play fast and loose with crossings...i thought the gearbox had seized as i pulled some G force...apparently its emergency braking..didnt know it had that...but i did see the umbrellas in the doors...i await further discoveries...

I know how disconcerting it must be & the g-force didn't´t cause problem muscle distortions. I don´t know your town, but here the crossing points are cent a moment. (now with the red, stripey, bumpy things) & most, & as I mentioned on normal Spanish accustomed, two-legged (or with dog & toddlers), push their wheelie-trollies (FIRST), possibly in their slippers, As their new born twins in the double “buggies” venture out into the danger zone. (most fixated in front, rarely, to the traffic, sometimes pass the day as friends chat. The traffic slows as they (the pedestrians, pushing their wares into the street, may be somewhere in the proximity, or even considering walking pass, or towards a crossing. 12 kph is usual. The Spanish drivers (maybe not the best in the roads!...... Alonso was good!) seem to have more awareness of pedestrians ( because many crossing the road are not even looking!) This is Spain.

This is a small town & will not change. Forget Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona. Think about how the locals in small Spanish, towns think & how many “zebra” crossings one see´s). Forget let´s have loadsa yellow zig-zags, parking a vehicle, well-away & traffic wardens.

On a last note, a little lady 3 days ago, was knocked down by an electric scooter on the crossing. Now the locals (& EU countries are talking of making if illegal, at least, having a noise making machine!) OH GAWD; more noise?

Just a thought, I hope your “nearly" twins are OK & don´t scratch the new car!

thanks Villas wifeys car is not damaged...Catral is a lovely little town with lots of things going on...but i would hate to see traffic wardens and parking restrictions like UK...we park anywhere for a short time but put the hazard lights on to make it ok...cant say i have ever seen the feds around...russians havent found it yet so its nice and quiet...

The concern I have is their lunatic placing of crossings, just after a roundabout exit or just after a junction, so you are often looking for any approaching traffic as you turn.....then see a million people crossing right in front of you.

Another act of madness is the number of people who try to cross the N332 ignoring the fact there is a footbridge twenty yards away.

I have been in spain for 11 years and can count on both hands twice the number of times I have nearly been run over.it seems to me pedestrians have no presidence.

A Spanish friend of mine told me just start walking across they have to stop.no way I value my life more than that.

You must be the exact opposite of my experience. It must be either, they´re "after" for you, or in,  the town you reside.

I find, that I even look like the remote possibility of thinking of walking within the vicinity of a crossing,  (maybe, many metres away), the traffic, slow & sometimes even stop. Perhaps, I´m just lucky, or just looking feeble & I don´t even have a shopping-trolley, blinkered pensionista´s or pushing a child in pram!. I can agree if you are posting from Madrid, or from the UK, when you need to even get a foot onto the crossing zone for traffic to even consider a pedestrian  "right of way!". It just shows how many see of different view-points. Perhaps the way forward.is, pretend not to be looking! Good luck.

Zebra Crossings - It seems to me that the Green Cross Code is not abided to here in Spain!!   Every body crosses the road without looking.  Is that normal practice?

Yes it’s normal practice because unless you’re on the crossing most won’t stop.
