Hi,

A woman friend of mine who was a qualified and experienced carer in the UK has decided she would like to set up a carers service in the Costa Blanca area. She has lived here for 2 years and is a fully legal resident.

What will she need to do to start up this service?

Will she have to have police and social services checks etc?

Any advice please?

I will pass on all advice and recommendations.

To begin with it would be advisable for her to go to her local Ajuntamiento to make contact with local Social Services to establish whether her credentials comply with Spanish requirements, and command of Spanish would be necessary.

She would either need to register as ‘autonomo’ (self-employed) or to set up a small company, with the intention of employing other staff? She will be immediately liable for tax and social security payments, and would need the services of a gestor to make her monthly returns and payments, which are required whether or not any income has been generated. There are reduced rates for the first 6 months.

There are already several Care Agencies in Costa Blanca, it may be worth while approaching them to see if they require more staff, but she would still need to comply with Spanish legislation.
