Hi dogsbody,

Whoever owned the property on 1st January 2020 is liable for the IBI (Council Tax).  The deadline is usually the first week of September, but this year, because of Covid-19 restrictions, the payment deadline was delayed to the first week of November, i.e. 2 November for payments taken by direct debit and 6 November for those who pay it online or at a SUMA office.

Usually, a buyer's abogado (lawyer) would retain sufficient money from the purchase funds to pay the bill, in case the sellers don't pay it.  If the seller has paid it, your lawyer should refund the retention to you, so the lawyer who acted for you in your purchase should be able to advise you definitively.

Kind regards,

Kim

Torrevieja town hall has announced that it is going to cut property tax (IBI) for 2021. Full report out on Friday = Costa Blanca News.

Hi Kimmy,

We’ve had our IBI payments for 2020 taken by direct debit over a few months this summer as in previous years.

Did people receive an email or letter about the possible delay option?

Perhaps this was only in Alicante City area?

Kind regards to you and all on CBF.    Stay safe.

Maria

Hi Maria,

Possibly only Alicante province, at that's where the SUMA agency are responsible for collection.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks Kimmy,

I was trying to say that we had no delay in payment being taken out by direct debit.

No delay due to current situation until November.

It was taken out by direct debit  as in previous years on time.

Ah, I see.  Some may say you were unlucky, but given the number of people who've been confused by why their IBI wasn't taken in September, I'd say you're the lucky ones!

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks all, I went into local Suma office today & found that the bill has been paid by last owner & I can pay the next one sometime in March/April which can be done by direct debit.

you are responsible, they will not remind you and will allow you to accumulate a debt then place an embargo on your assets, they are crafty in this way as my sister experienced.
