Since September 2023 we have been charged for sanitation services on our water bill, we have had the place for 9 years with a charge for water usage only so was quite surprised to see these extra charges.

I had  assumed as we are not connect to the sewer system and had a septic only for waste water we were not charged.

Does anyone know if this could be a mistake or change of  council policy ?

They stopped charging for sanitation and sewerage services about 2 years or so ago to help out  in the financial crisis with inflation and fuel costs.

Sure you would have been charged that before then.

Now they say the financial crisis is over and we are all rich again so they have reinstated those charges. In addition, they are charging everyone extra to recoup the money they didn't make and are taking it back over a set period of 3 years. You now end up paying that 2 years deferment over a period of 3 years.

Our bills were always around the 50 euro a quarter mark and then reduced to 35 euro a quarter during the period. They are now up to about 56 euro or so as they claw back the amount they didn't charge you before.

They call it the "regularisation of the wate canon".

All explained here Sewerage
