We recently moved to Benitachell from the United States.

Looking for information regarding getting residency so that we can get public health insurance.

We are retired so the option of working in Spain will not work.

Thank you for your advice.

If you are US citizens then I suggest you contact the US consulate or embassy for advice, I don't think it's a subject you can rely on a site like this for for accurate and up to date information.

This post contains a lot of valuable information, mainly from the Brit's perspective, but still very useful.

Jim's guides - your complete guide to SpainI believe you will need to have proof of the first full year's private medical insurance paid in full to get the Residencia and after the first year you can join the Convenio Especial for @ €65 a month each but this does not include medication or dental work.

There are some phone numbers and e-mail addresses to start and I would hope they would be able to point you in the right direction.

Just to make one thing clear - you need to obtain residencia i.e. TIE cards, but that won't entitle you to public health access.

As Cheryl says, you will need PHI in order to seek residencia. You'll also need to prove quite stringent proof of income requirements, and I assume you've already satisfied the PHI and income requirements in order to get the long-term visas to enable you to move here.

I'd guess you've already seen it, but if not look at:

We have some American friends who moved here a couple of years ago, they also are retired. According to them , it cost them a great deal to complete all the relevant paperwork, albeit they did most of it remotely, from California, before they moved. They did say, interestingly, that the compulsory private health insurance was infinitely less costly than that which they were paying in the USA.

Wow, now that is interesting!

We are also from California.

Do you think your American friends would be interested in speaking with us?

Thankyou,

Lisa

Normally I would say ‘yes’, but at the moment the husband has just returned home having had open heart surgery and is obviously recovering slowly. I hope you can understand my reluctance at this time as I feel it would be inappropriate to impose upon them. I am so sorry.

I know that they had to provide all kinds of documentation to the Spanish Embassy, with proof of financial independence etc etc and if I remember correctly the costs were some 10K dollars, but I could be misremembering.

Your best move would be to follow the advice given by previous contributors and presumably your first stop would be the American embassy?
