We have just purchased property to use for holidays in Benitchatell on 19/9/19 and understand we will need to pay non resident tax. Can anyone advise when the deadline for this is due and is the return straightforward. Our new neighbour mentioned going to town hall to get a digital certificate? We are not set up with Wifi.

Many thanks

Hello Brenda

The non residents tax is due at the end of the year

We pay a solicitor to do ours as having been caught out by the so called 'bargain tax' when we bought our property on El Cumbre we think it's worth knowing the return is done correctly and on time.

Service Centre Moraira (SCM) charge us €140 to prepare and submit the return we never have to do anything

Hope this helps

Hi Brenda,

I'd suggest having a read of this post by our resident guru, Jim Taylor, who recommends a company that will do your non-resident income tax for Eu 20:

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/taxes-suma-nie-tax-advice-in-almorad%C3%AD-25/jims-tip-non-resident-tax-returns-for-20-inc-payment-51142/

I would also recommend a UK-based company with which I've dealt in the past, although more expensive at Eu 34.95 per property, but everything is in English and is done online:

https://spanishtaxforms.co.uk/

Kind regards,

Kim

Kim's points are valid and Jim's Guides are of great use. If you bought on 19/09/2019 don't be worrying about the deadline as you pay before the end of December for the previous year, this means nothing to pay this year and in December 2020 you will be liable to pay from the date of your purchase 19/09/2019 until 31/12/2019.

Thank you very much for the info. In other word then do we not have to worry about return until next year Dec 2020? Sorry just need clarification.

Many thanks

No problem asking, everything is confusing at first and on some matters even after a few years. You are right, you do not need to do anything until December 2020.

Thank you for your reply very helpful. We just don't want to get caught out as hear that if you file late then you pay a late payment surcharge. We are just coming to grips with the Spanish system.

If you read the Guides that Kim has provided links to in an earlier reply it will give you all the information you need or direct you to Companies that will do it for you for a lot less than a Solicitor will rip you off for.

If you have a bank account here, then the report that banks put in to the tax office at the end of every year will have registered you into the system.

Your tax ID is your NIE number.

All you need to do your first return next year is the catastral number and catastral value of the property.
