I disagree - you're referring to permanent residency as a citizen of an EU member state.

Post Brexit, unless the draft agreement is ratified or other arrangements are made, then we will possibly all have to start again from scratch.

If the agreement is ratified, which looks doubtful, then we'll be able to swap our residency certificates for TIEs, and those of us with five years legal residency will indeed get a permanent TIE.

Oh the joy of having been born in Europe! It looks those like me will be enjoying a better status with Brexit. Freedom to roam in 27 other countries .freedom to remain in UK , possibly a 2nd passport.

my opinion, for what it's worth is that the UK Govt will hold a second Referendum once they have negotiated a final deal. However, it may be some years years before it even gets to that stage. We're already approaching year 2 and very little progress has been made.   There could ev...

Current Uk opinion polls show a big fall of those in favour of Brexit . If I were a betting man I'd lump my money on nothing much ever happening at all  -bar an in, out, back in scenario via secon Ref in 2020 -21.

Don’t know where your info is coming from what I am seeing no chance of a another referendum  vote was out problem is how we come out by agreement or we walk away Tuesdays vote will give us more info .

Firstly, I have no axe to grind here, Brexit does no affect me as I'm Irish.

However, I'm only going by the grand scales of ineptness that May and her tory conterparts lurch from in one week to another. They basically are a party divided and, given that the current deal suits no one in particular, it has not a hope in hells chance of getting through.  No we are being told the 'vote' has been postponed, all in the wake of the EU Courts saying Brexit can be cancelled at any moment.

Throw in the Northern Ireland backstop and you can see the mess that there is no way of getting out of. A 'No Deal' will never happen, so there are very few alternatives. Having the public reversing the decison is the only political face saver here.

I rekcond I'd lump a fair wedge on a 2nd Ref....if I were a betting man.

Nonsense,  the British are not like the French. The French protetst and strike over everything and wheras in France the politicians fear the people the opposite is truer in England. There may be a bit of disturbance from the EDL types,  but probably only on a scale of a riot after an England game. People will moan but life will go on as ever.

What ever  happens the UK will come out and lead the way for  the other nations to follow and just leave the sheep to remain.

We are looking to retire to the Costa Blanca around Feb 2019 just prior to the Brexit deadline. My questions are, do I need to apply for residency before the deadline or can I wait, and are there any pros or cons affecting which one I choose.

It is probably worth reiterating from time to time that there is not the slightest possibility that British citizens currently legally resident in Spain, or those who wish to move there in the future, will be legally barred or discouraged from doing so; they may, however,  need to accept that they will do so under a different dispensation and may have decisions to make as regards their own circumstances and ability to sustain their lives there..  In the event that existing provisions, and those tentatively agreed as part of a 'deal' with the EU are annulled, the basic right to settle in a foreign country subject to the norms and criteria imposed by that state would still exist.  People went to settle in Spain long before  the EU was conceived and they will continue to do so and, I am sure, to be welcomed. Indeed, it would surely be a serious human rights issue if there were to be any form of discrimination against British incomers as opposed to those from Russia, China, the USA,  the North African states, etc. who reside in Spain in considerable numbers. It is the possible withdrawal of special status as regards health provision, freedom of movement and general ease of integration into Spanish life which is at stake in the accursed Brexit process.  It will most likely become a more expensive and bureaucratic process to settle in Spain if there is no accord with the EU but, in essence, all that it will do is place the UK on an equal footing with all other non-EU states.  It might be helpful for anyone contemplating permanent re-settlement in Spain to examine closely the process of re-location from a non-EU state in order to get some idea as to what the future might hold.

We are applying for residentia end of Jan so hopefully being prior to Brexit will carry some consideration towards the likes of health care.
