Hi All

True or false if u invite friends or family to stay with you, they maybe asked in due course to show a letter of invitation from you at border control, if they are staying at Air BNB or hotel just booking evidence, this letter has to be obtained from police cost 75 euros.

Maybe Joke who knows.

Third thread starter on this in the last two days. Some papers scare mongering again I suppose.

No, it is not a legal requirement to have one of these unless you are applying for a visa and UK citizens travel visa free.

There is the remote possibility you could be asked for proof of accommodation on entering but paying for a letter from the police is not required.

It's not always necessary to have the invitation letter but if your visitors are asked for the letter at border control and they don't have it then maybe refusal of entry. The letter is proof that the visitor has somewhere to live on their visit.

Thanks Steve

Not come across anyone who has encountered this request at border control, you wonder as times go bye if this request of evidence of stay becomes more common place.

Think about it. The "official" requirements are proof you have enough money for your stay which is about 90 euro per day, letter to show you have accommodation, proof of onward travel within 90 days, passport etc etc.

Now a plane with 300 people on board turns up from Manchester (eg). How long would it take to process that flight before the next one lands from Stansted in 10 minutes if they checked these things?

These "requirements" are also needed when entering UK as well, same rules. I suppose if you were a back packer with flip flops, torn jeans and not shaven etc then there is the possibility you could be dragged out of the queue. Mr and Mrs Bloggs and Little Brat Bloggs aren't going to be asked for anything other than the passport.

We have had 4 lots of visitors in the last 2 years plus another 2 lots coming over at the end of this month. Not one has been asked for anything except the passport and, at the very beginning, a covid certificate but that was only one set.

But the official police invitation letter is not required.
