You still need to apply for the certificate of registration within the first 90 days of arrival.

Here is a quote from an Irish information site:

To legally reside in Spain as an Irish citizen, you need to apply for a Certificate of Registration (Certificado de Registero de Ciudadano de la UE) within 3 months of your arrival. This certificate will contain the important NIE number– foreigner identification number – that you need for various activities such as applying for health insurance or buying a car.

The 90-day time limit to get Residencia DOES apply to anyone who does not have Spanish citizenship. If you are over this limit without Residencia (and cannot prove that you have applied for it) and get caught (eg if you get stopped by the police or you go through Passport Control for any reason) you will get more than a clip round the ear. At the very least you will end up in court and you face severe penalties, including a hefty fine, or worse. Better you know that now.

The NIE is not the same as Residencia, it does not entitle you to stay in Spain legally beyond 90 days. By the way, when you sign on the Padrón, it's only temporary. You need to get Residencia, then go back to the Town Hall with your certificate and have your Padrón extended.

I hope your more goes well. My family and I (2 adults in our 40s, two teenagers) and relocating from Dublin to the Alicante region.  My wife will be employed under a Spanish contract by a local Spanish company so effectively, a local. I will be a contractor to a Spanish company, we will both register for an NIE (who can help us on the ground sort this?) and social security numbers.  And I will register as a contractor and employ an accountant to do my returns. Are we missing anything else ?

Hi can I ask you did you need to get private health insurance in Ireland or in Spain.  Do we not get public health for free as Irish citizens in Spain when you have your residency.   We are thinking of moving over permanently.  We have a house there but were thinking of selling up in Ireland and buying another or bigger place.  Hope you are enjoying your new life in the sun (after the current weather improves lol). Thanks

As posted by Steve see below link re NIE

https://housinganywhere.com/Spain/nie-number-in-spain

Would your future Spanish employers help with your NIE,  and PPS numbers?

What about schools and social life for the teenagers?

While a lovely rural villa is wonderful for holidays,  there may be little or no public transport for ease of access to shops, or schools, work, social life.   Alicante is a small city,  but has terrific and very cheap public transport, trains, buses and trams.

Many people on this forum are reporting the high costs of car hire and indeed owning a vehicle.   (Just like in Ire)

Health insurance for the family either through your work on the public system or private would need to be a priority.    Again your employers should be answering some of these questions.

Don't forget to bring valid EHIC for each family member.   These will provide only emergency cover at most health centres or hospitals.

Wishing you the every happiness and success on your move.    Continue to post questions here and use search bar above.

Kind regards

Maria

You don't need private health insurance if your on an Irish pension,or a medical card it's just the same as getting health care at home except Ireland pay Spain for your health care here, or vice versa if a Spanish pensioner moved to Ireland.

Hi Everyone,  I have an Irish passport and come from Northern Ireland. I have a UK driving license. Am I entitled to the same as an Irish citizen who lives in the republic of ireland?

No, your drivers licence is UK issued….

However you can exchange it for a ROI issued one provided you have an address in ROI…..
