Hello all, I recently opened up a Bank account in Calpe using Sabadell and am not satisfied as they seem to charge a lot of fees etc. Can anyone recommend a bank that is better? Thanks for any info!

Hi

I think you will find that all banks in Spain have charges and Sabadell isn't one of the highest.  If you go in an ask they will show you different account's and some have no charges but you need to put in a lump sum each month like a pension or salary.

We are with Sabadell and have a basic current account and pay a maintenance fee every quarter and a yearly one off fee for the debit card (s) but other than a fee every two / three years or so for a non residents declaration (which all banks charge a fee for) we don't have any other charges.

Some banks charge a lot more for things like using ATM''s and for each transaction but Sabadell don't.  It's worth going into a few banks and asking for a list of fees before deciding to change banks.

We were with another bank once and they were bleeding our account dry with the fees. We put a hundred euros into this bank to open it and came back to the UK before we bought a property and a few months later we noticed there was only about 50 euro left on the account ...we had not done anything with the account but fees had been taken off..it was quite scary! ...needless to say when we went back to Spain we closed this account and withdrew the 40 euros left and opened one in another bank that we had been recommended. We were with Halifax and then Lloyds first and when they closed down, we went with Sabadell (all were good banks and Sabadell still is in my opinion.

Thanks for the info, Jan! I expected fees but was surprised when they wanted to charge me for a bank transfer. I bank with Fortis Bank in Belgium and with them I can pay bills, transfer monies to other accounts within the EU etc for no fees so I thought this was a bit strange.

Do you know what age is classed as pensioner.
